I don't think I've taken the time to visit this site during the season but something is really eating at me so I thought I would bounce it off you folks.
I'm a HC at our school, we are off to a great start, 2-0, convincing wins, lots of great fan and parental support, all is well except when I go into the school (I'm not a teacher) for all the reasons a coach would need to enter the building I get NOTHING from either teachers, administrators, etc. Occasionally a janitor will ask about the team or say "Good game". If I see anyone else its just "Hi" and on to other things, no recognition that the 33 kids in the building are playing their butts off for the school. Very little from AD, nothing but minimal salutation from the principal.
I probably am letting this get to me too much but I'm wondering what other coaches experience with this is. It was the same last year when we won, nothing from anyone.
Is this normal??

Have you done anything to improve the situation? Have you gone to a faculty meeting to address the staff and introduce yourself? Have you gone around the school to department offices and get to know some people? Ever chatted up the office or cafeteria staff? They're REALLY good people to know. Do you know the procedure to have morning or afternoon announcements read? A lot of schools will read just about anything you give them but only things that they're given.
In short, how much effort have YOU made?

Each school is different but some teachers-staff just have no interest in athletics.
They would probably be more collegial if you were on the faculty. I substitute in school where I coach and have good relationships . But I think most were interested in Football before I got there.
I wouldn't worry about it, have a lot more important things I can do something about like preparation for this week's game.

I agree with fantom. Sometimes you have to make a special effort to pursue and sell the team. How is the support for other sports in the school? At our school we have a similar situation with parents/fans however, the school is all band all the time. The school board/super/principal are all pro-band and will report on nearly anything that they do or get without prompting. For the football coach, you have to fight/remind/hound/etc.... to get your team recognized.
We have asked our athletes to attend other school functions and show support. We have also initiated some lower level service projects by the athletes. Last year they did the landscaping in the courtyard and some painting to convey a positive image.

I used to have kids give teachers their opposite jersey on certain games..for instance for a home game the kids would give their teachers an away jersey..I made sure all the secretaries got one etc..the kids rwere responsible for getting the jersies back and the teachers loved it

Make yourself available to help when necessary. Chaperone at a school dance, send the secretary a gift, etc. Make friends and then sell them on football.

It's the law of 1/3s. One third will be with you, one third will be against you, and the other third is open to go either way.
The easiest group in your third is probably the kids, starting with namely you players. Get them involved in motivating that middle 1/3. Also, there will some teachers in your third. Identify and motivate them and now you can start swaying the middle third.
Once you get the middle third coming you way, you know you are doing something. If you can get most of the middle 1/3 in your court, then the third that is against you will go from being against you to being the group who just says, "Who cares''.

all is well except when I go into the school (I'm not a teacher) for all the reasons a coach would need to enter the building I get NOTHING from either teachers, administrators, etc. Listen, I am not a teacher either and I get what you are saying. However, I think a lot of the responses here lead to the same thing....go into the school for other reasons than what a coach would need to enter the building for. Our HS principal has never spoke to me about anything, let alone football so don't feel special about that one! Not to rile anyone up here, but if you aren't a teacher, some of the faculty just flat thinks you don't belong. One way to combat this is to get involved with as much as you can within the school. Not because you will get noticed by the others, but because that is what a HC does, he gets involved in the lives of the young men he is n=in charge of. Offer to work with the wrestling coach in the weight room, go to (ugh) girls volleyball or basketball. DO whatever you can to ingrain yourself into the fabric of the school. Then you become someone who can't be ignored because now you will have the students and parents who see you on your side. And not to hijack a thread, but my theory on why administrators don't like you is they can't control you by threatening your teaching position. Also, dcohio...that is a great idea on the appreciation night. To many good people go unnoticed, great job.

Thanks for all the ideas so far! I guess it just never occurred to me that I had to do anything other than field a competitive team to get school employees to identify with the football team but I see that I'm not the only one who has faced this problem.
We'll roll out sleeves up here and get it done!

Be glad they ignore you. I walk the halls for all 20 min I have free a week (and I'm filling up ice mind you) and I'm hearing "good to see you got on the board" for a 50-6 loss.
The dude, a supposed "coach," was pretending to be genuinely happy for us. C'mon now, he's lucky I didn't knock him out. Then he has the nerve to attempt to talk to me about the upcoming week while I'm halfway down the hallway (I moved double-time to avoid striking him)... "hope you guys fair better this week..." yeah, so do I, pal.

Do you know the swim coach? Have you said, "Good game last night" to the womens' tennis team coach?

kyle. The womens' tennis team wouldn't exist at our place without the gate receipts from the football games. And yesterday (though I'm not the HC) I said "good week" to our girls H20 polo coach...whose team destroyed the two teams they played. I didn't have to, but I did.

When you're not on the faculty you have to work harder to connect with the teachers. They don't know you. It's not on them to build good will. They can be your best friends or your worst enemies.
