Standing on field during Pre-Game at 6 pm Thursday August 23 - temperature 88 degrees, sun blazing, no breeze - I'm thinking this is WAY too early to be playing HS Football.
Week or more before first college games. Two weeks before NFL regular season kicks off.
Two games before Labor Day, three before school starts. It's SUMMER, not Fall, for Chrissakes.
I know I'm a dinosaur but "Back in the Day" our first game was third Friday in September, last second Friday in November.
But that was before playoffs. And with amount of money taken in each week of tournament it isn't going to change.
So I guess I'm just venting.

Two years ago in TN we could not start our first game until after 8:30 because heat index was still over 104 at 7:00.

I agree with you, too much. However, the way things are now, teams are practicing 2 hours a day 5 days a week in june, july, and august... so what is the difference?

By state law public schools in Michigan cannot open until after Labor Day (help tourism industry). School where I coach is starting a week later because Supy is trying to stiff teachers on step increases-experience credits (contract issue). Fortunately Summer practice is one area where our state association has maintained some sanity. Kids need time to be kids. I'm certain the early start hurts participation at some schools.

And what really hurt us down here in the SW corner of the state was that during our second week of practice we had 55-60 degrees for the high. Unseasonably cool and consistently raining despite drought conditions the majority of the summer.
So I knew going into our week 1 game that the temperature would be more of an issue than it normally is. It's usually in the high 80s, low 90s for the first two and possibly three games in Michigan. It's easier for the kids to handle the weather leading up to games if they have the opportunity to acclimate to the heat. We missed a week of that this year.
Fortunately 4 of my 5 starting OL don't start or play many defensive snaps and my 3 starting DL don't start or play many offensive snaps. That being said blb, I know what you mean regarding the heat.
I wonder what that was like to start the season well into November. But I won't think about it to much because, like you said, the format of the season ascar as a timeline goes will never change.

Kids need time to be kids. I'm certain the early start hurts participation at some schools. I think this speaks to the "season creep" we are seeing in all sports. We keep demanding more and more from kids in terms of practice time, off-season conditioning, watching film online, etc., and then we turn around and grouse that numbers are falling off. I understand that we are all in something of an arms race - if you aren't doing it, your opponents are - but surely we can all see the correlation between the increased commitment we ask from kids relative to a generation ago, and the drop off in participation...

A kid can't miss a practice in the first 2 weeks and play in the scrimmage and can only miss 1 and play in the first game. I have 12 kids of my 38 on varsity that can't play in the first game. Work is one of the main reasons (they all work) as well as many scattered other reasons. 30 years ago I wasn't so tolerant. Now I have to bend some. Starting later and playing into November would help a lot.

I'm in FL and I WISH our 1st game wasn't until the 3rd week in Sept. It's hot in Sept., but usually by late Sept. the heat at night eases off a bit. I bet you'd see a decline in heat related injuries here if they moved the season back that far.

Back in the day in Wisconsin when only the top 2 teams made the playoffs we could start september and be done in early november. Now that we let just about everyone in, we start early.

Season creep is just out of control with every sport.

We play 2 games before school starts and it's blazing hot when we begin practice...dangerously hot. Playing 16 games to win a state championship is too many. We need to start later and adjust winter and spring sports as well.

We started the second week of August, so this week will actually be our third game before Labor Day. We used to play 1-2 games before school started, but then they moved up the first day of school to August 3rd. We get out for the summer on May 25th.

Lol, our preseason starts in may (used to be june) which is winter. Canberra nights are usually about -5 c which makes it fun plus with get wind off the snow all winter. Then our games start late August so for finals we get to play in 30 c which is always fun toward the end of season with injuries. Plus guys wanna push it back further to try and bring more rugby guys across.
(sorry for using c for temp, can't remember conversions
