How much time do you put into live scouting? Do you think it is as beneficial as tape? I know there are benefits to it, but what do you get out of it? Is it just being able to see a team live? There pregame, demeanor on the sidelines Thoughts.

Film is great for scheme. But you really see what they are like in person.

Being in Australia, we have very little film and are lucky that we all play consecutive games on the same field. I love hanging around in the stands (or even better, chain crew- we have to supply crews for 4 games a season) to watch our next opponent. Ive watched a bit of film but it doesn't show emotion and little things. Like the team we have next week came out after a series and I heard the ol trying to work out where to block and get their doubles. my solution, stunt them differently, constantly.

Haven't done it at all in the past except to help out other staffs.
Scouted 2 nights ago and we felt it would give us a chance to see the size of their kids, warm-up, things they might cut out of film, since we don't get trade tape. The real - time experience gives you opportunities that tape doesn't present and allows you to get to see some football live.

Would you rather watch the play once with no rewind or watch it multiple times each time focusing on a different component?
Can you look at film to determine that "#7 is a bad mutha of a tailback" or would watching live tell you that?
If you've played this team each year for the past 5 years, will you need to see them live to figure out how they're coached on the sideline? the character, interaction, etc. of the players/coaches?
Don't underestimate the power of ..... rest. If you have a Friday night off, rest up, enjoy the family, allow yourself to get a small recharge so you can continue to devote full energies to coaching 'em up.
If you are going to send scouts - and they have NOTHING to do for you on game nights - then I guess go a head. However, if you can free up some coaches to either a) help the varsity with on site duties or b) allow them to recharge then you may be better served overall in the big picture.
However, if you will not be receiving any tape on the upcoming opponent - you simply can't get anyone to give you some stuff - then I guess you have no option but to scout 'em live. But, if you're getting 3 games, then maybe you can use that energy in other areas.

I'm not crazy about live scouting. There are certain things you can get from it but most happen before the game. Unfortunately all of my HCs believe in it. When we scout all of the assistants are rooting for the same thing- a blowout. Doesn't matter who wins or loses just get it over with by halftime.

This sounds like most of the coaches in our league. Every year at the league meeting we propose film exchange and they vote "no". They all like going to do the live thing. So we have to scrounge up film wherever we can or send a dad out to shoot it from the stands

Easy---film. I will live scout if we don't have a game when another team is playing, but we're going to use film for those games as well. There are some things you can only get from seeing them live, but in order to get those things you've got to have someone who knows what they're doing watching. I can't spare anyone like that on a Friday night. I need the best people I have with me....and sending someone else is a waste of time. I quit sending someone 20 years ago when it became obvious the reports I got were a waste of personnel, money for gas, and my time reading them. Every conference I've been associated with in the past 20 years or so has required film exchange, and I haven't run across a non-conference opponent who wouldn't trade. Anyone who wouldn't has enough enemies out there that getting film of them would be no issue. Heck, with people like that you don't even have to go looking for film, people will call you offering it to you. As someone said above, you can watch film over and over and over....live you only get one shot at it. As for the coach who said they send a dad to film in the stands---that will get you fined and maybe get your butt kicked as well in the Carolinas. (I once nearly saw a full scale brawl break out over that issue at a conference meeting when one coach accused another--rightfully--of doing that).

Coach, I love watching film because I can rewind and forward to where I need to be. I think you should do what works for you.

I hate scouting live. The only time I feel like we're completely prepared is when I have a tape to review as much as I want. One of my biggest weaknesses is seeing stuff live, even in game. I focus on one and miss the other 21 players. Give me half of a game tape over 10 live games. I'll learn much more.

I like seeing them live in addition to film because it is so hard to gets the routes off film

Used to do EVERYTHING off of live scouting as that was my role as a JV coach. I felt it helped me more learning about the sport than anything I could have done and feel it is important to develop those skills of HOW to watch a game. Once up to the Varsity it became predominantly film, and is still the same since I became a HC 12yrs ago...although I've made a push to get back to more live scouting. IF I can get to a game now to live scout I use it to note tempo, sideline dynamics, cadence (which is very important), and evaluate general environment for an away game. I make notes about frequent plays/formations/routes, but won't break it down play-by-play as before...that comes from the film. I guess the one difference is that when I was at my old school in through the mid-90's we didn't trade the most recent game (just previous 1 or 2). Where I am now we trade the most recent 2 games by rule.

Im gonna echo the sentiments of a lot of others here, film. Its like the old adage about eyewitnesses being the least reliable evidence.

we don't even send live scouts anymore and haven't for about 8-10 years. we exchange 3 films with everyone. Except for their roster, it's kind of pointless IMO. Our local HS sports web site publishes every local team's roster so we don't even need that.
