Coaches,
I am confused by my squad this year. We have simplified schemes, coached our kids etc...
but we cannot get them to practice hard and it carries over to the games.
We have no depth so getting a good scout team look is not possible. Also, we do not want to go best on best for fear of getting someone hurt in practice.
Thoughts/Suggestions are appreciated.

All you can do is point out and praise 2nd effort plays (pursuit and downfield blocking for example), criticize lack of effort.
"Play Hard Until the Whistle'"
"Make 2nd Effort a Part of Your Personalty"
"Effort is NOT Optional"
"Your R/H - Run and Hit - Factor Determines How Much and How Well you Play"
We do the typical Team Pursuit Drill, a 1-Man Pursuit Drill, a "Perfect Play" drill, and a Crossfield Blocking Drill to try to instill those ideas.
Kids choose their own attitudes. They have to want to be good. You unfortunately may have a group who doesn't care enough-is not Self-motivated.
If that's the case there's only so much as a coach you can do.
We've all been there.

I agree with blb, all you can do is do your best. You can not make kids physical, and you can't make them intense. You can do drills and things that may help or show them how, BUT its ULTIMATELY up to them.

My exact situation. I have 25 9th graders, and only 7 of them are hitters. The rest are huggers. Of those 7 only 2 are linemen.

I got irritated with the WR's the other day and I switched them and the Oline guys during a 10 minute inside run period. The Oline guys had a blast running routes and "shaking" DBs, talking chit to the DBs, etc. The WR's...well...they didn't have so much fun trying to trap our 3 tech or trying to block MIKE. haha. Coach, though I do understand the point I don't agee with ever doing this. I think this serves no purpose.

Once a year I like to run our OL through the Blaster that the RBs do. They tend to think that nobody else works hard at practice so when they feel sorry for themselves I show them how the other half lives. That stops the griping for a while. Right now we're having a problem with our OL and some of the skill people have been bytching about it. When that happened at our old place the HC sometimes had the RB run a play on the OL to give them an idea what goes on in there. It's a lot better than having the OL take the matter into their own hands by "opening the gates" for a play during inside drill.

That whole, "fear of getting kids hurt" part is worth exploring, IMO. I think we as coaches spend far too much time fussing over that. You don't want to do anything reckless and stupid in practice, of course, but going best on best helps you simulate game conditions, and gets you some quality reps. I have seen kids get hurt on the most goofy plays you can imagine - heck, I had an offensive lineman go out for the year after breaking his ankle in two places going over a bag in an agility drill. I have also seen our best kids take a savage hit in scrimmage, and bounce right up. I don't think there's any correlation, frankly, between who is getting which reps when it comes to injuries - kids are kids, and football is football.
To me, your quickest fix is to get over the fear of injuries, and go best on best in scrimmage...

If I can't try to simulate game intensity with best on best in practice, I'm in alot of trouble. What we gain by doing that out weighs possible injuries. in my opinion.

To me, your quickest fix is to get over the fear of injuries, and go best on best in scrimmage... I have been struggling with this issue since contact started. We had a player break his wrist during a full contact period. But it wasn't contact that broke it. Yesterday was terrible. Until, we benched our nose tackle, replaced him with a back up linebacker, that will run through a wall, but can't read run or pass to save his life. The nose tackle went over to the scout team and proceeded to block like his butt was on fire. First game is Friday. We have the ability to pull any freshmen up, but haven't done so as we thought our sophomores wouldn't need the extra kick in the {censored}. So if Friday is a CF, we are pulling the best freshmen up, and next week is Fight for you Job week.
