We start on Monday, three weeks away from our first game. Our starting QB, fullback (Flexbone Triple) and our Mike Linebacker (4-3 Under) will not be at practice for the first week due to a circumstance that I nor they can control. They will be eligible to play and they did not do anything wrong. They will be away for a great experience. I am not happy about it but I can't control it. Usually we would have anyone who misses the first week sit the first 2 games but they have been issued a waiver and they are also our 3 best players
My question is, how much should we install offensively and defensively? They are going to miss a maximum of 8 practices...Do we go along as normal and expect them to catch up and jump right in or do we limit what we do so we aren't double teaching? We will have an additional 13 practices before our first game. I understand no one is above the program and all of that. I am looking about this long term for the season and not week 1. What would you do ?

You have to move on without them and prepare the next kid in. Once they return, they can compete for a spot as they catch up. Can't hold back the rest of the team for them. I certainly would not hand them a starting spot upon return. They do have 2 weeks to catch up which is plenty.

It is a great way to create depth. Get the next kids ready.
Chances are, they are your best players because they know the schemes and are athletic. That won't change.
Practice like usual or you are sending the message that "the team doesn't work without these three guys." or "The world stops without them". What happens if they get hurt during the year? Sack the bats and call it a season?
