O.k. as a coach I don't like to second guess other coaches especially in the NFL because they obviously know more than me BUT I must ask why with a tie ballgame and 4:36 left the leagues MVP doesn't touch the ball one time? What happened to all the creativity in the Chargers offense? Did it look vanilla to anyone else? What happened to LT in the 4th quarter? My second question is why the Chargers didn't spike the ball with one minute left after getting the 1st down? Instead they waste 20 seconds getting set and then catch a 4 yard pass which takes the clock to :24 seconds? Finally you don't think other teams with :08 seconds left wouldn't have taken a quick pass to the sideline to try and gain a couple yards? I know this is nothing compared to DROP PASSES, FUMBLED PUNTS, FUMBLED INTERCEPTIONS, and wasting a TIMEOUT on a challenge? O.k. my short rant is through!

I didn't think it was all that great of a game. I guess I am a little bitter in that I think Tom Brady is an average QB that everyone makes out to be the next messiah. He threw 3 picks, tons of balls in the dirt, overthrown, behind his receivers and he people compare him to Aikman, Elway and Montana.
At the end of the day, it was an ugly day, it was just that NE was the less uglier beast.

I think that Marty-ball struck last night...
The challenge flag that Schottenheimer threw on that fumble after the INT was awful...cost the Bolts a timeout and gave Brady and Belicheck lots of time to talk about what they wanted to do...bad, bad move.
And how does LT only get 23 carries? Guy is the league MVP...he needed to get the ball AT LEAST 30 times last night.

LT averaged 5.34 yards per carry in that NE game. 5.34 is a very good average, especially in the NFL.
My question is why do some coaches like Shotenheimer consistantly lose in the playoffs, even when they have tremendous regular seasons?

Give the Pats the credit they deserve, THEY WIN FOOTBALL GAMES. Tom Brady is doing what Montana used to do, except Montana had Rice and company. Brady has barely anyone around him and he just wins games. End of the half, end of the game drives, he puts the ball where it has to be. I don't want to sit here and argue, but Tom Brady being an average QB is a very.
Aikman had Irvin, the best O-Line, Smith, ect. Montana had, everyone. Elway had Terrell Davis and Co. Brady has a mixed bag every year, He rises to the occasion. 3 Super Bowl wins, going for a fourth in the Free Agency Era.
But I guess that is what makes the Pats so good and always so hungry, because there are alot of people out there that do not give proven WINNERS respect. Some people just look at great players, not great teams........ Playoff game with alot of points, and coming down to the last kick is not a good game to watch................ wow

I'd stop pointing fingers at the offense and start asking questions about the Charger's defense. Giving up 11 points in quick succession like that is unacceptable- especially when Brady was having such an off night.
However, I do wonder why, when up by 11 points with 4 minutes left in the game, Schottenheimer didn't just feed LT the ball, especially on 1st and 2nd downs. Heck, chances are, you're worst case scenario in that situation is a 3rd and 6- then just run a draw or screen to LT. There's something to be said for patient and conservative play calling, at all levels of the game.....

He had the head phones off most of the game so that was Cam Cameron's call. The person who should have been clocked were the stupid DBs for the Chargers. The Patriots got a touchdown because a drive that would have ended with a punt continued with a taunting penalty against a DB. Another TD resulted because the DB tried to intercept a 4th down pass instead of knocking it down. What happened? He fumbled the ball. Of course, the above opinion is stated by a Patriot hater so take it for what it is worth.

Marty will be fired very soon, It might have been Camerons playcalls but Marty let him call it. I have not like the Playcalling for years, that isn't the first time the Bolts have lost and LT hasn't touch the ball late in the game. ( Last year I think, Bolts down my 6 or 7 and 1st and goal and LT didn't touch it once. BOLTS LOSE!
STUPID PLAYCALLING!
just my 2 cents. ( I live in San Diego , BTW)

Schottenheimer is a very good coach. Winning it all is hard. I was in it 24 years before we did it and some great coaches never have the good fortune to do it at all. Sure he made some mistakes. We all do but they don't get noticed when you win.

So many things went wrong at the end of the game. There was an injury time out sometime in the 4th quarter I believe while they were on Offense and the next play they had to call thier 2nd TO after the first one was wasted on a bad challenge. On the last play of the game with :08 left I think Marty did the right thing. With no TO's and a Rookie QB, you could try to run more play to the sideline, but if something bad happens, ie a sack, tackle in bounds the game is over and your kicker doesn't even get a shot. I have never liked Marty as a fan, but his coaching of the game was total opposite of what he normaly does in the playoffs. So maybe you have to wonder if that playoff record and his reputation of getting conservative in the playoffs worked against him in this game.

Well, we also have to take a look at the dropped balls by San Diego WRs- there were 4 of them at pivotal moments in the game. Too me, it looked like the Patriots were playing a lot of Cover 3 looks, keeping 8 guys in the box to slow down LT. Cameron and Schottenhiermer were taking advantage of it and calling quick stuff in the flats- with WRs dropping easy balls.
However, I do think it's bs what the sport's writers are doing today. They're after Marty like he's some throwback cave-coach that runs the double tight Wishbone, won't throw the ball and loses games because of it..... Morons...

He also ran into a coaching legend in Bill B and the Pats...

I always loved Marty. I have always hated San Diego. So this rant has a total bias (hopefully some truth, though). San Diego has been anointed the Super Bowl winners ever since the Bears started stinking it up in the middle of the year. They did the same thing last year (the best team not in the playoffs, that kind of bull)
Even more so this year, because of the love fest ESPN and everyone else had with them (oh, Shawn Merriman took steroids. Big deal let's send him to the Pro Bowl. They were probably fake steroids anyway. Now that McGwire guy, let's ruin him as a person and take him out of the HOF. But, Merriman, you know, just made a mistake. Lights out!) The Chargers and especially, Marty have been set up to fail. Anything short of a title is terrible. If that is the case then Andy Reid should be canned. Or Marv Levy should have been sent packing. Coaches don't lose the games. The players do. And we always find something wrong. Who cares if LT didn't get enough carries? If he got 30, people would say that they are riding him too hard and he will break down (a la the Larry Johnson garbage). People are mad because they threw too much, but weren't people saying that Philip Rivers was one of the best QB's in the league?
I get sick of people playing the blame game. The "team" lost. TEAM. The Patriots understand that concept and that is why they win. I am not a Patriots fan, but I respect the heck out of them. They just win. People get mad because he is too conservative. When I watched him as coach of the Chiefs we were conservative from Week 1 to our first round loss. I think that San Diego was the same team this week that they were all year, they just got beat. Why should a coach change his stripes in the playoffs. No one here would find that a good policy, yet we expect NFL guys to do it.

Everyone rips Marty but fact is if his dumbass defensive back holds on to Brady's third pick, Chargers win and everyone is talking about what a great gameplan they had against Brady. Chargers got beat because of stupid personal fouls and a dropped punt. The dropped punt and fumbled pick aren't Marty's fault.

Martyball isn't probably the best bandwagon to jump on. Chargers didn't play that wonderful on D, it was a sloppy game. The only bad decision I can see Marty making is the challenge to lose a TO. Don't they have people in the box privy to the replay to guide the HC in his decision to challenge??? If they do, then the challenge was a STUPID call. Changes the shape of the end of the game with another TO.

I think the announcers even pointed out that Marty doesn't wear a head set. He lets his DC and OC call the plays (the thing they are hired to do). Now, I will not say that Marty has no history and doesn't have a say in the Chargers game planning. But do you think he is making the calls in the field without a head set - probably not. Also, he is going off of what people are telling him about the challenge. In hindsight - stupid. WE could ALL see that from the slow-motion replay. Marty probably only had a little time to make a decision based on his info from the guys upstairs. He didn't even have the time during a possession change because the Pats offense was already on the field! He had 30 seconds (a minute tops) to make the decision. He HAD to challenge because it was such a big play. If he didn't challenge and the ball should have stayed with SD then he would be remembered as an even bigger a.s.s. Not a Marty fan here, but I am certainly not tossing him into the fire over this loss. Some players made huge mistakes that cost them the game and I believe they still would have beat any other team in the league that night other than the Pats. You make a mistake against them and they go for the throat. Thats why they have won their 3 Super Bowls. My $.02
