Coach's, I would like to hear what you are trying to accomplish during your first week or so called Hell Week and some of the things you do?

We practice, and continue the installation that we have done all spring and summer.
We have practiced every Monday through Thursday for 90 minutes followed by lifting and running.
We took the week of July 4th off, and now we are heading into pads on the 31st. Once the pads come on...we'll start preparations for our week 1 opponent.
We aren't into the pissing contests and the proving who can be harder on the players.....we are preparing for a great season, and my philosophy is that we don't have time for that, much less, I don't want to get someone hurt by doing something foolish that isn't in the best interest of the team.
Everyone has their own philosophies, and that is fine....but I don't like hearing...well when we played...we had to do it....guess what, they didn't water us back then either.....and I don't think someone is stupid enough to keep that philosophy around.

Ohhhh...forgot to mention, that we only practice once a day...anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours
no need for a two a days....we've worked since spring...we don't need two a days

"Hell Week" is a bit of a strong description. You want a bit of shock and awe for the new players the first week, but you don't want to run them off. Mostly you just want your usual approach with a little more intensity. You don't want to waste time running in circles, but if you need to set a disciplinary tone best to spend the time now than suffer it all season.

The first week of practice is just that-practice. We don't have pads but it's still a normal practice.

If it's pre-season...we go out and practice. Just like the regular season. Indy/7-7/team O or D. Install our systems. We are allowed to be in shells during this time so it's not just conditioning/lifting
If it's first week of full pads...double sessions just like any other practice.
We don't call it hell week, just practice. We are not there to torture or run kids off, we are there to build a team.

Kids SHOULD be conditioned from the offseason and any legit practice time should be used for that, practice. There are several opportunities that naturally present themselves to push the mental and physical resiliency of the players without manufacturing torturous scenarios. Just focus on getting better and getting the kids ready for the season.

We have 2 a days for 2 weeks for those 2 weeks we work on cardio and fitness in the morning when it is cooler out and then in the evening practice we go over our X's and O's and do our indy stuff. We are not allowed to have manditory practices over the summer its all optional so we do not get a full sqaud for these. we are a small school and have maybe 25 kids with 12 of those freshman so most of our kids will plays both ways so we need to get them in shape as best we can. Unfortunatley we live in a time where if a kid does not HAVE to show up most time they wont.

Just like others have mentioned we will continue to install the rest of our O, D, and Special Teams that we have been working on since early June. We have conditioned hard since then since we will be using guys on both sides of the ball despite being a school of 1200. We will continue to condition once we start practice on Aug. 8th, but it won't be anything unlike we have done in the summer. There is no need to take away a lot of time from practice to do extra conditioning. We feel the kids who didn't work out with us all summer will be that far behind the learning curve as well as conditioning wise that it shouldn't really matter about doing some "Hell week" to see who is in good shape.

Loads of Indy, We have been practicing all summer. But we continue to work the fundimentals for our 2 a days. By Wednesday (the first day we are allowed to go full pads). We will find out what we need to focus on the rest of the week.
After 1 week of 2 a days we start prepping for our scrimmage like it is a real game. then it is week 1 of the season.

I call it "Mini Camp" and its just like any other summer workout...with the exception of County Fair. Our Mini Camp is four days before the 1st day of "official" practice. It continues for the first two days of official practice. My kids must get 6 days of county fair to play. Selling point to attend "Mini Camp" is after the first two days of official practice they are in shoulder pads for county fair...which is very much no bueno!
