Ok, here is the situation. The very first game between school A and school B who are the only two high schools in this suburban town. The game has been played up big time in the local media. Team A has been playing football since 1933 and has experienced it's share of ups and downs. Team B is a 3rd year varsity program. Team A is physically superior; rushes 55 times for 564 yards throws the ball twice the entire game completing 1/2 for 16 yards. Final score- Team A 61 Team B 12. Everyone player on Team A plays. Team A runs 4 different plays the entire second half (buck sweep, counter, guard trap and Down). Team A scores 34 second half points playing mostly backups (we have 4 healthy RB's in a 3 RB offense). At the end of the game Team B coaches accuse Team A coaches of running up the score and challenge them to a fight, in front of the kids. Team A coaches take the higher path and walk away. Team B's coaches threaten physical violence off the field. Having been involved in the game of football my entire life as a player or a coach, I have never witnessed coaches behave the way this staff did. I have been in my share of blowouts when we were on the short end of the stick and we shake the other coaches hand, congratulate them on the win, walk away and run home to watch film to see what we can do to improve as coaches. This was an emotionally charged game between rival schools, but the coaches behavior was over the top. I am just curious to see how many of you out there have experienced anything like this and how do you respond?

I don't know what legal or interscholastic action you could take but heck yes, I've been accused of everything from playing over age players, had a team walk off the field in the 3rd qtr., had coaches refusing to even walk out to shake hands, been called all kind of ugly names, and had stuff thrown at us, my car or the bus and most of this has been coaching youth football(11and12).lol! I'd hate to think of the abuse HS coaches might take! But like you said, when we get whupped we go out and shake hands, with no excuses or trash talking and try to work harder, get better and hopefully win the next one! I was gonna say, the society we live in today is getting crazy with this overly competetive crap but then I remembered the coaches having to pull the bus to the dang sidelines to pick us up after a rival game in high school, flew to the locker rooms, grabbed our stuff, dodged a hail of rocks and cans and got the heck out of dodge! And this was in the 69-70 season, so go figure? Some people are just "nuts"! los

I would have your AD call over to their school on Monday and let them know that this was totally out of line. Other than that, screw them and continue to take the high road like you guys did. Don't worry yourselves with p i s s ants like this. Like LOS mentioned, it happens all too often for any of us to loose sleep over it. Continue to coach your kids up, maybe use this as a teachable moment with your team on how not to act.
Good luck coach, sorry to hear some jacka$$ coaches had to ruin a great win for your team.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your responses. It is unfortunate that adults who are supposed to be mentoring kids would act this way. Losing sucks, but part of becoming an adult is learning to deal with disappointment and adversity. We always tell our kids you find out a lot more about yourself when you lose than when you win. I am going to let our administration take care of it. We have our last game on Thursday and if we win, we are in the playoffs. So it is time to concentrate on the next one. Once again gentlemen, thank you.

We like to tell our kids that - Football doesn't build character, it reveals character. You found out a lot about your team as well as your opponents. Win or lose we always walk across the field, look them in the eye and say "Good Game" as we shake their hands. Continue to take the high road.

Bulldozer, I had a coach do that to me after the last game this season. I coach at a school that just played its 5th varsity season ever. and has a total of 3 wins. The final score of the game 50-12, with my freshman, (only 24 kids 9-12 in the program) playing both ways in the fourth quarter. The coach has the nerve to tell me that I am classless for running up the score on his kids. Now this is the same coach that beat our school 54-0 the first year that my school ever played football. Some can win well but not lose well. Just blow it off and drive on!

Take the high ground.
If asked about it just say "With that passion I'm looking forward to the challeneg they'll give us on the field next year"
Returns everyone's minds to football.

this message goes out to all coaches
coach your own team, get blown out? congratulate the other guy and work harder next week. sheesh. we also had an issue this year, this classless boob GRABS my assistant coach and yells something incoherant about playing 7th graders...we only won by two scores or something for crying out loud. how do these guys get coaching gigs in the first place?

I saw something along these lines a few weeks ago in the first round of playoffs here in MN. A 6 seed playing a 3 seed and the 6's RB rushed for 330+ against them. The 3's coach made it obvious that they did not like the QB of the 6 and did everything they could to get him out of the game. Late hits and working the offical on that sideline. Well the QB got thrown out in the 3rd quarter for clapping while the RB popped a 85 yard TD run. The coaches (who had foul mouths anyway because we could hear them dropping f-bombs across the field) told the ref that the AB swore at them and they booted him. The 6 still won and lost the next week but they couldn't play with the QB by the state rules. What was funny though... when they showed the run on the news...you saw the QB clapping his hands running down the field not even close to thier bench. Their coaching staff was eyeing us down after the game and were chirping. The coach at the 3 has done some good things for the program and they had a winning season for the first time in a long time, but what did he show his players that day. Classless and sad.

I agree with Coach Calande on this. I have been on both sides of the ball with this. Number 1, it is my job to coach MY team, not yours. While I have NEVER tried to run it up, what are you to do when your 3rd back runs a simple DIVE for 70yards and a score...?
I'd file a report with your league, have the AD's talk, and even consider a police report for the verbal threats...There is no place in any level of football for that!! No mater how heated the rivalry is...you just have to be a better man. Congrats to you and your staff for walking away and not getting baited into something stupid.
