"There are two kinds of people in the world: the ones that protest and complain and want fairness despite never having earned it, and the ones that fight their asses off to be important and make a contribution. You have to earn the right to be treated fair. The people that have a problem with that are the scrubs." -Jim Wendler www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/the_walk_on

That quote is silly...fairness as a concept just is what it is, it isnt something earned, either things are fair or they are not...what he should have said is that life isn't fair...what are you going to do about it?
however, the article itself is fantastic.

But who gets to decide what is and what is not fair? I think that is the point of the quote...there really is no universal standard of fairness. All that exists is the distance between what you want and what you are willing to do to obtain it.

19delta I could not agree more.
In 2008 I was a skeleton athlete kind of a mid of the pack guy (4th at Nationals) pretty average athlete. Canada at the time was a world power we had won 2 of the 3 men's Olympic medals it was competeitve like nothing else if you beat a Canadian at the top you were essentially going to win World Cups.
Own The Podium comes in and funds the sport like crazy because the more chance you have at Olympic Gold the more $$ you get as sport. But they come in and say this: "We will treat each of you equaly but not fairly"
I was like "WTF". Then they explained it to me -Jeff Pain won Silver in 2006 at the games he needs: -coach (off ice) -equipment -(nutrition coach) -yoga instructor -technical needs Tottaling: $21,000 not including other funding just the extras
I need all of this to and will have the same access to things being equal ie: chance to compete, ice time, access to coaches, information and such. But do I get the $20,000 + extras? NO why? What had I done to prove that I deserved that.
I sat as athletes moaned and groaned about how this is not fair I need those same things. This is when I realized that we are all equal but that doesn't mean we are treated the same

I guess I felt like the quote kind of contradicted the rest of his fantastic article.

But they come in and say this: "We will treat each of you equaly but not fairly" You get your point across here coach, but I think you inverted the quotation. From reading your post, it sounds like they treated you guys FAIRLY , but not EQUALLY. It is FAIR that someone who has a better chance of success in an individual sport receives more support. The fact that it is MORE support means it was not equal.

That was an amazing article and the quote is better if you take the time to read the entire article.
