Is farting in class inappropriate? I averaged at least one or two rips a day in school. Anyway I think you need to draw a line, an the "f" word is a good place to do it. I am an intense guy, and as a player I use to swear now and then, but our coach instituted a cuss bucket. If he heard any coach or player cussing that was a dollar in the bucket, no questions asked. The money went to pay for our end of the season party. Let's just say I lived 20 miles from my school and needed gas money. My mouth was much cleaner after that. Anyway, if you need this guy on your staff I would just go to bat for him with the AD and the administration and make the coach compromise and stop cussing.

CAN YOU IMAGINE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CALCULUS TEACHER..."TOMMY, SOLVE THE F*&^% PROBLEM LIKE A SUMNOBIAAAAAATCH".... Can you imagine asking a calculus student solving a calc problem by tackling the kid with the worksheet? Football field behavior and classroom behavior are 2 different things. The football field is a place where certain behaviors that would get you in trouble off the field are not only allowed but encouraged. What makes a student/athlete in my opinion is the ability to flip that switch from aggressive/dominant football player to mild mannered student. Same thing applies for coaches. "Football field behavior and classroom behavior are 2 different things." ooops youre right, in class rooms we shoot people instead of cursing when we are upset...sorry i couldnt resist.

It's not football behavior vs classroom behavior - it's cursing/swearing in front of and at kids! I'm no prude but if you're telling me that you as a coach can't get yourself fired up or your kids fired up without dropping an F bomb .... I just can't support that.

fbdoc you said you never swear, but if you drop an a$$ you have sworn. some of us are trying to say, that like you, on occasion we use inappropriate language. with me it is not every other word, not even an every day thing. looking back i can count on 1 hand the number of times that myself or one of my assistant coaches used a vulgarity through the entire season (pre-season included)
if that shows i have no class, or that i am not professional than i guess i accept that moniker
no one, and i mean no one on this board is perfect. you may "say" you are but i can guarantee each of us has used a vulgar word at one point in time or another in front of our players

Our last HC was suspended by our school board for swearing... A kid overheard some coaches in the hallway outside of the lockerroom discussing a matter of discipline. It involved suspending a kid for actions unbecoming of an athlete. One of the assistants was defending the kid and the HC replied "That's a load of BS". The kid told his parents and his they sounded the "His actions are destroying our children" alarm. The HC was suspended for our next game. The kids ears are everywhere and they hear every detail (except on the practice field sometimes)...even when you least expect it.

knighter- never said I was perfect, never said you weren't professional.
This thread started because ccscoach said he had an assistant who was reprimanded for saying to his players ...
"Kick his F... A$$ "
and
"Beat the living pi$$ out of those A$$holes "
Is there anyone out there that truly feels these comments have a place in high school football?
Yes, I did admit that on very rare occasions - maybe twice a year - I tell our team to "get your A$$ moving!" I should be a better mentor to my coaches and our kids.
A a previous poster said, we need to have a certain decorum when dealing with kids. The AFCA is also very clear on this. Hugh Wyatt has frequently quoted the AFCA's Code of Ethics on his website so I know many of you DW guys have read this. Article 8, section 1 reads:
"It is vitally important that a coach's actions and behavior at all times bring credit to himself, his institution, and the game of football."
Are any of us perfect? No, we never will be. But if anyone can honestly say that -
"Kick his F... A$$ "
and
"Beat the living pi$$ out of those A$$holes "
are acceptable phrases to use in front of kids, then I'll drop this topic and move on.

Best practice, dont tolerate cursing and dont encourage it by doing it yourself.

"Kick his F... A$$ " and "Beat the living pi$$ out of those A$$holes " I personally never drop the F bomb so players can here it. Nor would I use A-hole. But I'll tell players that I'm pi$$ed about their lack of effort at practice or a game. Or that a guy needs to get his A$$ lower. But when those words come out- it's because I've already expressed my unhappiness with their effort. Or I already politely coached that tackle to get his pad level down. These bad swear words are a tool to get players attention and to listen to us. Sure I can bench said player. But then I get to hear F bombs from the stands about why my quarterback is on his back all the time.. So I'm going to use some coarse language to get the tackle to get his butt lower!

Best practice, dont tolerate cursing and dont encourage it by doing it yourself. Yes, that is the best policy. There is big difference between the occational slip up and it being a habbit.

what is tolerated is encouraged. Take Coach Bobby Knight, he expects his players to behave in a certain way. then he goes nutso.
I think kids see this do as I say, not as I do as a load of B as in B, S as in S. when you live your life in accordence with what you preach then kids will respect you.
I find it hard when a coach tells a kid to control his emotions so he does not get a penality and then the coach berates the officals in a emotional way. to me anytime you go nutso as a coach, you have just told your players they do not have to control themselves. just my 2 cents.

these are all great points and perspectives and I will certainly refrain from swearing this next season because of it. Great feedback.
