I was watching a game this weekend. the one team was clearly better then the other. the team which was better, with 2 min left in the game and a 26 point lead. they call time out and attempt a field goal, which they miss. is the coach a champ or chump?

I would say a champ, b/c think of the outcry that would have been made if he went for it on 4th down and made a 1st down or scored. I'm guessing that b/c this coach was having his way with the other team, he might have thought kicking a FG was a better option than going for it. With 2 minutes left he couldn't have called for a kneel down.

Champ...
Special teams is a very important aspect of the game... here was an opportunity for the coach to get a live look, vs an angry and hostile team... not his scout team... and he gets to see how his kicker reacts under the lights... even if its only minimum pressure.

Champ - Early in the season. Get a live FG goin. Would it hurt your feelings? I wouldn't be pissed at the FG. I'd be pissed that we couldn't play defense!!!

Many coaches forget that what goes around, comes around.

chump. Go for it on 4th down and thatd be fine...but to call time out (!!!) to kick for more points???...26 points is a 4 score lead and very secure...this was an attempt to rub it in, want to work on field goals?, thats what practice is for. just one mans opinion.

champ-
need to see it under the lights to know when the pressure is on and it IS needed if you can count on that special team to win a game. 26/29 what is the difference?

Field Goal = Champ. Not running up the score, practicing a genuine play and skill as part of the game.
Time out = chump. What happens when he has to rush his field goal team on in ahurry when he needs it? has no frame of reference to get it right.

I thought he was a chump but for other reasons.
he was passing the ball when they are a running team with a lead that big. if you run the ball, you better no start working on your passing game in the 4th quarter with a 28 pt lead. to me that is rubbing it in the other teams face.
now if you are a passing team, I can understand throwing the ball because that is what you do.
i also thought he was a chump because the guys who call time out for a FG attempt, are also the guys who cry foul if another team puts up big numbers on them.

i would agree with airman (hey there is always a first in everything right) the timeout may have been a little excessive. run em out there to get lined up, and kick it....good practice for when you might really need it.

I don't think them trying to throw it late in the game is necessarily rubbing it in your face. I have been part of teams that had to throw it to keep the score down. It all goes back to working on something you might need down the road.
I always thought it was my own fault when we got hammered, not the other guys.
