The "future of our sport" post got me thinking about the mouthguards we purchase and give to our kids.
Any suggestions for reasonably priced gel mouthguards to buy in large quantities?

Are these gel mouthguards safer or better at preventing concussions than others?

Are these gel mouthguards safer or better at preventing concussions than others? I believe so. I think the idea is that the gel does a better job of absorbing the shock of a hit to the head. ...but then again, I'm just an English teacher.

Studies have shown that mouthguards have pretty much NOTHING to do with concussion prevention.
When you buy the fancy schmanzy $20+ ones that promise everything under the sun, you're just buying their marketing.

At the FCCA clinic there were companies at the expo making all kinds of outlandish claims about what their mouthguards do for concussions that didn't make any damned sense. Then one of the major sponsors got up to talk and he backed right off those. He claimed that they protected against concussions caused by blows to the chin and jaw but came out and said that his product was not going to protect you against most other types of concussions. It was that weird company that was onf MNF a couple years ago, so he had other selling points, mostly that their product is now down to $15.

I love my son more than anything in the world. If I thought for a second that a pricey mouthguard had any value, I would buy it. He has worn a cheap $2 mouthguard his entire football career. :-)

Aligning the jaw is goo, but I'm skeptical about a mouthguard's ability to align the jaw without being fitted by a professional, which some are now claiming to do.

We purchase the cheap ones that schools have used for years, but we also allow the players/parents to purchase the more expensive ones if they wish to use them (as long as they meet the rules and regulations).

I never had a concussion and I never wore a mouthguard in college (they weren't mandatory yet). Not that I'm recommending that but for every example of one side of an argument there's an argument of the other side.
