Coaches I would like to see what your process is for issueing varsity letters. I am a second yr hc. Last season we had a small team of 26 so everybody lettered. This season our numbers have doubled. I have heard of some teams that require a players be in a varsity game for 10 quarters to receive a letter or just everybody gets a letter. What do u do?

Our district's policy is that a player must appear in more than half or the season's total quarters. If the regular season is 10 games, a player must appear in at least 20 quarters.

We letter every athlete that finishes the season in good standing.

I firmy believe that all players who finish the season in good standing should earn a varsity letter. Our sport is so demanding physically, mentally, and time consuming that I think not lettering all players in good standing is border-line criminal. Just because a player doesn't get enough snaps or plays in enough quarters shouldn't matter. What if the kid was burried on the depth chart but would start on most other teams? Did he do anything to not earn a letter just because the players in front of him were better?

one thing we have done in the past is letter all kids when we make playoffs. having those scout kids stick it out those extra weeks when they could be off doing something else is huge. the letter is a way for the staff and starters to say thank you for the hard work and making us better.

We have a point system. Players must earn a certain number of points. We give points for grades, playing other sports, participating in fundraisers and raising a certain amt of money, quarters played, making summer workouts, coaches pts for how hard a kid works. Pts for number of years in program.
All first year players must play a minimum of 20 qtrs.
If you are a third year member, play other sports, get good grades make summer workouts, etc. You only have to play about 8 qtrs to letter. We want well rounded kids and this promotes academics, good character, and kids who play other sports.

We require 24 quarters to letter. We count any appearance in a quarter as a quarter.

For those guys who use points or quarters for lettering, who keeps track of that stuff? It seems like a lot of trouble to go through.

Each coach is responsible for their players. It is not as bad as you think. For ex. If your kid is a starter, that is easy. If he is a jr. and plays special teams and plays other sports and has good grades, easy. It is usually the jr who does not play much or the soph that gets a good bit of time that is hard. In most years, I only have to look up 2 or 3 players to check.
