Have any of you used an application for players who want to be captains or be part of a leadership council? If so, how did it work out?

We have a leadership council comprised of players from each grade(except freshman) who are selected by the head coach. As far as captains, a player who wishes to nominate himself for captain must write a short essay on why he should be a captain. This essay is turned in to the coaches and then read in front of the entire team. Prior to going before the entire team, the candidates are "interviewed" by the staff. Then the players vote for captain.

We had anyone (besides freshmen) compose a letter of interest outlining their experience, why they think they are a leader and what they plan on doing to display leadership if they were selected captain. The coaches the take the finalists and interview them setting expectations and asking them "what if" scenarios

I have seen where the last years team votes on the new captains for the next year team. THis is a team with tons of tradition who want great leaders to continue that winning tradition.

We will have any JR or SR fill them out and we will pick who are our captains based on how they respond to the questions that are asked. We give a dead line and expect players to type up their responses to the application and then bring them in for an interview based on the application. All the coaches will sit in on the interview. I will try to find our doc. that we use and post it.
