Yeah.....or....you could tell them "this" after the game...... (in the words of a rap song....that I hear a million times a day at work)....."you can do you"...."but watch me do me"...

To me, airraider, the problem is your current kids won't fully take pride in running it up because the poor sportsmanship didn't happen to them. They won't be as emotional about it as you are.

I have come to believe that the first rule which college teachers should teach future coaches is take nothing personal. if you take nothing personal and respond kindly you have defeated all those who might attack you.

I was wondering what school the 6'3 200 lb All City QB was coming from?

Personally, I see it as being wrong for many reasons. You are telling them that it is okay to do wrong, because wrong was done to them? If I taught my players to react like that I'd have no team left; theyd all have been expelled from school for getting in fights with hoodlums and gang members. If someone on the opposition gets away with a cheap shot on one of your boys will you encourage retaliation of a similar nature? I would hope not. When the postgame handshakes come down would you want your players to run their mouths off to the opposition too? To me these aforementioned examples are similar to running up a score on someone to exact revenge. You prove yourself with victory, with how your boys play; not by reciprocating classless acts. And to be honest, who are you trying to prove something to by running up the score? The other headcoach, why? Do you care that much about this guy to try to hurt his pride? It seems to me to be tatamount to arguing with a stubborn fool, they'll ignore opposing views and only waste your time.
Sorry if it sounds like I was on my highhorse there, I feel strongly about the topic.

As most of you know I coached at pretty under talented team this past season. Most teams we played really took it to us.. a few even went on to humiliate us. One team in particular had pulled their starters late in the 3rd quarter while up by 32 points. They put their offensive starters back in in the last minute of play and tossed a 60 yard TD pass to put their final score at 52. This same team also played the team I just took over. My new team beat them 22-20. It was a horrible game in which it looked like it was going to be a blow out early.. and then the wheels fell off. This was largely due to being very under coached. Brophy and I both left this team just as the season was starting and they had to take on the offense and defense with the staff that remained. And quite frankly, they did not do a good job at all. Here is my question to you.. This team I now have only lost 2 meaningful senior starters. We have sense had 2 very good pick ups move in. We are also expecting a 6'3 200lb QB who was all city last year to move over as his dad is one of my assistants. There is a GREAT chance that we will be WAY better than the team was this past season. If you had the chance.. Now that you were the one with the superior athletes.. would you prove a point to this coach who put his starters back in to score in the final minute? JUST to play devils advocate here...was there any reason for him to do what he did (other than trying to hang 50)? Obviously Airraider, you are going to probably say "NO" because chances are you don't that you guys did anything to merit it. BUT I think we ALL know situations where a team that was on the wrong end of a blow out has done something to "merit" such action. Maybe a cheap shot, maybe keeping in all of the starters and just blasting away at the backups because you know they are just running dives... Just something to think about.

the moral of the story should be, "its not personal, its business". We are out there for 48 minutes to compete. If you give up and stop competing, I'm not obligated to stop competing as well. If you want to schedule a scrimmage, schedule a scrimmage.
Point is, why not take the same "asswhupping" approach to all your games?
Do you think you will teach this coach a lesson? Unlikely Do you think you will regain whatever manhood you think he took from you the last go round? That is weird, but that is what a vindictive attitude would be spawned from.
If you say he did it intentionally, then he did it intentionally. However, what if he was smoking your team so bad, he put the scrubs in......great, the scrubs got their game time, now what else can he get out of the competition? Game reps executing plays (passes) they normally won't run (unless its do-or-die)? ....put the starters back in and work on stuff they are not good at.....
Who's fault is it that they scored so much on y'all?
This is like blaming my boss for not paying me enough when I max out my credit card. Its not their job to make sure you keep it respectable.

If I knew I was the better team I would get it over with early and play my subs. Nothing says redemption like your starters with their helmet in their hands on the sidelines by halftime.

Big difference in doing what you do and scoring just because you and your backups are better. This guy put his starters back in with less than a minute left and threw a 60 yard TD pass. Did I mention they were a Wing-T team?? Whose fault was it that they scored so many points?? What kind of ignorant question is that? I guess its the gods of talent that did not shine down on Sarepta.

in my opinion there is only 2 times when running up the score is justified,
1- when you're the underdog (example wvu 48 ou 28)
2- the other team comes into your house and hangs up touchdown club signs all over the place (don't even get me started)
also a good thing to do would be to try and jump out early and suck the will from them. And besides you don't want to start the whole "revenge" thing because it will never end, this is how people died where I used to live

I have not read all of the posts on here, but I did read most of them. My hall of fame head coach would never let this happen. (running up the score on someone) The main reason is: what about all of those scout team kids that bust their a@@ all week long and never get to start, you may or may not get up on everybody, but those kids deserve to get playing time just as much or more, than your starters. That is how we look at it and I believe it is the best. Our biggest rival will try to do this every few years and succeed, they are twice our size. But when we have the chance we dont, and everyone realizes it and talks about it. The people that don't, don't matter anyways. new2veer

When I was a DC I coached for a guy who had gone 0-9 and 1-8 the two previous seasons before I came there. The first year, we were together, we went 1-8 but were competitive. He often talked about the teams that beat his teams 48-0, 66-0 and even 72-0 and now we were at least competitive - losing by 2 TDs instead of 6 or 7 TDs
The very next year we went 9-0 but lost in the playoffs. We were talented and could have run the scores up but chose not to.
He always said, "they're just kids and I'm not going to run up the score.' I've been there."
Take the high road and play to win but not to win in a cheap way. Probably the best thing I took from working with this HC

I'm sure its much like a team kicking the endzone pylons around and jumping on your midfield logo in their pregame. my entire career was like this... we always had a huge target on our back and people always took their best shot, the week I was talking about was against a 4-0 team that thought that because they had the same record as us means that they are just as good, not true... they also went to midfield during stretches and started yelling similar to the movie "300" but that movie wasn't even out at that time anyway we ended up winning 64-2 (punt snap went over punters head which is kind of impressive seeing as how the punter is 6' 7") that crap happened to us ALL the time, and we always won...

Is turnabout really fair play? No. Doing the right thing is fair play. That said I would be tempted to run the score up but I guess that would be more revenge than fair play & honestly revenge has never been as rewarding to me as I thought it would be after the fact.

You shouldn't run up the score no matter the circumstances.

it has been my experience with those who have the kill mentality and are willing to keep the starters in to run up the score is, they like to kick people when they are on top and when the shoe is on the other foot, they are the biggest whiners and complainers.
I do not see it as running up the score if you have your subs in. they practice all week and deserve a chance to run the offense. If you are up by 3 or more tds in the 4th quarter let those scrubs get some game time.
I have run the score up a couple times and i regret doing it now. I believe you reap what you sow in life. I also believe this when it comes to officals. if you are a coach who is disrespectful to the officals, I see them as holding that against you some times.

what do you guys think about putting in the scrubs when the game is decided and then you put the defensive starters back out when they get to the 15 yard line to maintain the shutout?
