I am curious to see how many programs out there use some sort of supplemental program to teach character in their program. For instance, I know of a school that did classroom type work on character. Does anyone use this type of program in their athletic program? If so, what program do you use?

www.coachcharacter.com/I feel this is the best program out there. we use it and it has been outstanding. Wade Salem is one of the best if not the best "character coach" out there. well worth it.

We do classroom stuff twice a week. On Tuesday's we start practice in my classroom and we have a story, parable, theme of some sorts that we read and discuss with the kids. Talk about it, get a lot of the players talking not just coaches up on a soap box. Then on thursday we meet in my classroom again and we have 2-4 questions that players have to answer over the reading/theme, etc.....
Usually take about 20-25 minutes on tuesday and 15 minutes or so on thursday. It was hard to sacrifice practice time but we talk about character and the things that sports teach you all the time, I didn't want to pay lip service to it. I felt it was an important part of what we do as coaches so I had to show that by being willing to sacrifice some time to do it.
It has been very good for our program. Definitely not the only reason for the change but our record in the 3 years before organized character ed we were 15-17 and in the two years since we are 15-4.

Check out "Coaching to Change Lives" by DW Rutledge. Has handouts, group discussion, etc.

Our program created a version of the "Winner's Manual" that our players will work through over the course of the year. We took samples from various sources to help build the Manual. "Coaching to Change Lives" was a huge component of our program. The players had various worksheets, stories, situations, goals, etc. that they had to work through and discuss with the team. It worked well for us. Last year was the first season we did this with our players and we are always looking for ways to make it better for our athletes.

A great coach down in South-Central Texas has a GREAT program that he calls "Building Men for Others." He got the idea from the book Season of Life, I'd highly suggest picking up the book for all coaches of any sport and also for ANY father with a son.

We took the best stuff from several sources and created a program called Champions for Life. We modeled it after the stuff from DW Rutledge and Dennis Parker. We are constantly adding to it as it is a living, breathing program.
