I was just offered an assistant coaching job at a great d3 program. I'm more than excited about the offer. However, here is the problem I have right now. I'm a HS head coach, and I know that my career will be as a college coach at some point. It's what I've always wanted. If they were to offer me this job next winter after the season, I'd take it in a heartbeat. But it is just so close to the start of the season and I don't know if any of my assistants would be willing/able to take over. (I hate to admit that, but its just the way it is). I feel like I'd really be screwing my kids. We just went to a team camp a few weeks ago and this would be my third year with them, the program really has my stamp on it right now.
I know that I should take the college job as it is great for my career ambitions, but I just don't wanna hurt my kids after I've done so much for them (and they've done so much for me).
HELP!!!!

Coach if you passed on this, what that hurt your main career goal and could you live with it and also if you left those kids could you deal with it? The 1st one is more important

my HS coach was offered a HC job at a D3 school. He said he always thought that was his dream job but declined because of the same situation you are in. He was starting to build a real dominant program and thought that leaving would put it in jeopardy (i.e. he would be blamed for it the rest of his life). He decided to stay one more year....that one year turned into 17 more and counting.
He discovered his passion was for HS, but his aspirations were college. He has no regrets for what he did, but said that taking the college job probably would have been a big mistake for him.
I guess what I am getting at is..is this your passion? Is this where your heart wants to be. If it looks to your kids like you are doing this for money or power, they will not accept it. They can see if your heart is there and they will probably encourage you (despite some sadness) to go.

what message would you be sending your kids?
I know every year a major DI program offers a coach late in the game....he always takes it (and many have said it would be contrary to what they teach the kids --> always strive for an arena to meet your goals....strive to be a competitor).
GO FOR IT, COACH!
Sure, we would ALL feel bad for 'turning our backs' on the kids, but frame that perception on what you have ALREADY done for the kids.....next season should be autopilot anyway with how much you've already instilled in them and teach them to deal with adversity / change.

We are all in this profession to help kids but you also have to look out for yourself too! If that is the route you want your career to go then I would take the job. If you have always wanted to coach college ball then explain that to your players and they will understand. Some may be upset you are leaving but they will understand. I left my job (multiple reasons) for another and some of the kids there were upset but understood it was a better career move for me.

Coach, I have done both...was offered a head coaching job but stayed on with my kids, the following year I was fired. I have just taken a Div3 job and will be leaving my program, with my stamp. The team is on its way up now and looks like it can finish with a decent record. My advice is to write down what you want from the div 3 program. Include title, will you just be a postion coach or taking on more responsibilty Money, this is always a factor Where is it and how much time will it occupy and take that from your family How long are you commited to the new program Their are other various questions that you may want to ask, do so, and don´t be afraid to ask for things. Remember this is no hat in hand asking for a handout; it´s your life. CRL

Coach,
You must follow your heart and your career goals what ever they may be. I resigned as head coach at a school for my current job the Friday before fall camp started. I know it screwed the kids over, but now 6 years later I have been apart of a good football program, live in a great town, my family loves the town, the school etc... and I will be taking the program over after this fall.

I hate to burst any one's philosophical bubble, but as an old-timer once said, "Loyalty is a name on a shirt." If you don't believe that, wait until you've been fired once.
Your feelings for your players are admirable and understandable. But you are also one mean-spirited parent, administrator, or board member from being out of your current job.
If your career goals involve college coaching and this move involves no unbearable sacrifice for your family, you should take it. The kids who sincerely care about you and are not selfish will be happy for you.
And, you can always get back into HS coaching later. You may never get another college opportunity.

Thanks a lot fellas. The feedback on this board is unbelievable. After a lot of thought, a lot of conversations and a few glasses of bourbon I have decided that I'm going to take the college job! Meeting with my AD, Principal and Superintendent tomorrow. Meeting with the kids on Tuesday. Going to be a tough discussion with the kids and probably quite a few tears, but I've gotta chase the dream. Thanks for helping me out guys.
PS- Saintrad if you're willing to move to NY and coach for very little pay at a small school with about 20 kids on the squad, send me your resume and i'll pass it on!

Guys, I just got off the phone with the head coach at the college and he told me that they hired me because I was the best candidate they interviewed. However they may be switching some coaching assignments and they may want to pull me over to the Dark Side and make me coach defense!! I've never coached defense in my life, so all you 3-5 guys, I may be on here a ton asking for help. So I will still be frequenting this board quite often looking for help. This has to be the greatest website ever!

Good luck moose!!!
I went through the same decision 2 years ago and again this spring and decided to stay at the HS level. I have done the college thing before and decided that I really would rather work at the HS level. Ultimately you must do what is best for you. The hard part is that you always leave kids that you care for and have built relationships with, no matter how long you have been there.
Again congrats on the new gig and good luck!

Good Luck Coach... Coach you took the West Conn job! Great...The HC and OC are really good people. I was going to take the O-line job early on, Mark Bourque the OC contacted me, but the situation was´nt right at the time, but he was an alright guy in our conversations, please tell him Roldan Leyba from Germany say´s hello and that I will be at Menlo College this year in California starting Aug 7.
Remember! Always look like you know whats going on. Also you have a few weeks to get the 35 down. My advice is to down load a make a book on the defense and its variations and applications and get their playbook from them ASAP. SKnow everyone´s job too! I was a defense guy and one day my HC came in and handed me a single wing Playbook and said"Make this work for us, you have two weeks and your the new OC" I told him I did´nt know do do about Offense. He then stated that I better because if I did´nt "I was fired!" I really did´nt sleep till after spring ball...and my ulcer returns about the start of it almost every year. Good anti- acids to ya.

Can you tie your move into any type of message you preached to your team? Goals? Aspirations? No man bigger than the team..no team bigger than the program. Opportunity knocks..be ready. etc

Best wishes, moose. Be intense enough to get the job done, relaxed enough to enjoy it. D3 coaching, at least in my experience, was a ball because it was working with college-level athletes in a high school-like atmosphere!
