Going through my game plan the night before a 5 hour drive game, I wonder what are you doing the night before the game? Do you have any routine? Any superstitions?

I may watch a film or 2 but for the most part, the "hay is in the barn". Relax, sometimes it eases my nerves by reviewing my call sheet and then giving myself certain scenarios like ok" "its 3rd and goal from the 9, what do I call" etc. besides that... you have done what you can, it'll be here before you know it

Our country is pretty small, but even with an east and west division, we still have to travel 5 hours for this game, yes.

Coach I will add something to my previous posts, one thing I do is create my plan B for personnel..
meaning if my RG is injured whats going to happen, if my RT gets injured what will happen etc. What plays do you like if one of your studs gets hurt?
I also create a list of 10 run calls, 10 pass calls that I know my backup QB can do best

Typically I get home a little earlier on Thursdays. After things get settled at home with the family I will watch a little more video on the laptop (or iPad this fall) work on any call sheet revisions and relax for a few minutes with my spouse.

If we don't have to scout (Thursday games are pretty common here) I'll just relax. I'll watch some TV (The Office isn't what it was but it's still better than most) then read a little. No superstitions.

LOL. Are we the only ones who have to coach a JV game, clean up, and do laundry on Thursday nights. Then do it again all over on Friday?

Watch a freshman game or what ever game is on ESPN and relax. After reading a book on Vince Lombardi and how he got his best sleep the day before the game I thought he was crazy. Then I start coaching and realized that all our work is done by Thursday night. Friday is supposed to be fun. No need to loose sleep over it. If you have prepared get some down time.

We drive at least 2 hours for every game and I usually take a nap. Sometimes I quiz players for a while, but usually they want to do teenager stuff. The return trip is definitely a nap.

Sounds a little different than most on here but before I was married, I used the night before a game as the night to clean my house!! Always stayed up late cause I couldn't sleep! Would vacuum, dust, sweep outside, water, etc. etc. etc. Those were in the early days of being a Head Coach, and I was more nervous than I am these days! Now, I'm married, so my wife does most of the cleaning. I'm usually with the team having our pregame meal and just hanging out as a team. The kids cherish those times, and so does our coaching staff.

After reading a book on Vince Lombardi and how he got his best sleep the day before the game I thought he was crazy. Lombardi had Bart Starr calling the plays. He had less to worry about.

I coach freshman. I spend Wednesday nights praying that they don't get their tails kicked too badly because they refuse to play the way we practice, thinking that they know better than their coaching.

After I get home from Freshman and JV games I turn on whatever Thursday night game ESPN is showing and don't watch it.
I start worrying about all the things that can go wrong in our game.
It gives me a good head start on Friday.
Then I go to bed around Midnight (and with the aid of a few adult beverages, hopefully to sleep shortly thereafter).

After I get back from our JV game, I put that ESPN Thursday night game on but it just seems to be going while I think about our game the next day. I usually have some beer to put me out so I'm not up all night thinking. What else can you do? The work is done at that point...Friday is payday.

Apparently all of us guys in Michigan spend Thursday night the same. After the JV game its home to a few "adult pops" and the ESPN game that I seldom watch while going over my call sheet one last time!

I either go out and have a couple beers to relax, or stay at home get the grill going and also have a couple beers. It's all about being relaxed.

good thread.
Theres usually a good amount of thursday games around here since lots of teams share stadiums. So another coach and I usually just go watch one. Its a great way to watch a game- relaxed enough because its not yours, but still drawing stuff up in your head and thinking about things.
The real rituals begin in the morning when i shave and shower and then head down to the local taquiera and grab my traditional sausage breakfast burrito.

Get as much sleep as I can. The only ritual I have is to find some time to listen to some relaxing music on game day.

We play Saturday afternoons here. Friday evening is spent either scouting teams who have lights or relaxing with family. I need to make sure headsets are charged and ready, and our camera is also charged and the chip free for filming.
I do review game stuff in my head as I relax.

Yep. That's the disadvantage of coaching both. We don't have a varsity and JV staff. We have an offensive and defensive staff. We coach both. Varsity practices o, JV does D. Then we switch. All coaches (except maybe the header) get the joy of a JV game on Thursday.

After practice, I will grab dinner with a few of the coaches and then we will head to the JV game and watch/assist from the box. After the game, head home and un-load on the couch to watch what-ever ESPN game is on. I will usually watch that game until I fall asleep. I have found myself waking up to my alarm clock (on my cell phone) and still be on the couch.
