I'm watching the Final Four coverage and one thing that's hit me is Ohio State's kid saying that Kansas just "wanted it more". I'd take offense to that as a coach.
They caught the kid at a tough time, I know that. He had to say something at a time when he really wanted to tell them to go eff themselves. He's trying to be gracious and say the right thing.
When our best player says that the other guys won because they wanted it more that bothers me. Am I wrong?

When our best player says that the other guys won because they wanted it more that bothers me. Am I wrong? No, you're not wrong. But it doesn't bother me unless I think it's true, which it rarely is. That's just one of some dumb things coaches say ("Hit somebody!") that kids hear and repeat without thinking, especially in a situation like that.

Yeah...sounds like "coachspeak" or, even worse, "fanspeak", to me.

"Coach speak" or "fan speak" for sure, but they train kids to do things like that. Have them memorize a throw away line and you won't embarrise anyone. Although we HATE IT, it's just the facts of life in this 24 hour a day, news cycle we line in. Instead of "I played great, but Fred over there really stunk the place up." Which probably is true, but would give the reporter what he's really looking and hoping for-a national story. Instead, he got "coach speak" which is fair enough for him. It's wise, although we hate it, to train kids to say...something that's really not going to get us all fired. OJW

Ohio State played in consistant all season lone. usually it was one game good next game not so good. Last night they played one half good and one half badly. A fan and the media would say they choked under pressure.

Am I wrong? so this youg man goes to a motication seminar where he listens to his favority motivation guru talk. the young man comes up to the guru and asks the secret to his success. The guru says " meet me at the beach at 5 AM tomorrow" The young man in his excitemetn says "sure" The next morning the young man shows up ready to work in his best suit and tie. The guru is in sweat pants. The Guru asks r you ready to learn. The YM enthuastically says "YES" The Guru tells the young man to wade out into the water. The YM is a bit confused but he does so in his best suit. So the YM wades out to waist deep. The guru says further. The YM wades out to his chest, the Guru says further. The YM walks back in and as says tot he guru he is cold and he does not understand. so the next time the guru walks in the water with the young man. once the get to wear the water is up to the young mans chin. the guru then pushes the young man under water. the young man flails around and just before he is going to give up the guru pulls him up from the water. when they get back to the beach the young man very mad as you can imagine askes what is that for. The guru "REMEMBER HOW BADLY YOU WANTED TO BREATH UNDER THE WATER" the young man " YES" the guru " WHAT WERE YOU THINKING ABOUT" the young man "ONLY BREATHING" the guru "THERE IS YOUR ANSWER TO SUCCESS. YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL WHEN YOU REMOVE ALL THE DISTRACTIONS IN YOUR LIFE AND FOCUS ON BREATHING BECAUSE YOU WANTED IT MORE"

Ohio State has a basketball team? Actually DC, with the success of Cincy, OSU and Ohio... I believe most people now consider Ohio a baskeball state like Kentucky and Indiana. Maybe if they get lucky, OSU can get an invite to join the Big East or ACC ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ohio State has a basketball team? Yes, and they are trying very hard to make the Football team proud! Apparently Craft was quite a HS QB.

Why in the name of God are you watching basketball? Basketball was invented to give the athletes something to do between the two major sports - Football and Spring Football.

When our best player says that the other guys won because they wanted it more that bothers me. Am I wrong? No, you're not wrong at all. I feel the same way. Say "they made plays down the stretch and we didn't" or something. Not "they wanted it more." I don't even know what that means, "they wanted it more." What the hell?

Craft is real good. Don't get me wrong, I want O-State to win per state law, however - I HATE Buckeye fans. Being here I always think it's funny. Buckeyes lost on saturday and on Sunday everyone is like "it was still a good season" & "they gave it a heck of a run" "guys played hard" etc. Buckeyes lose a football game...1st loss - WTF were they doing? Freakin Bolman has to go!! XXXX isn't that good, they are putting too much on him. And it's like a period of mourning for like a week. 2nd loss - its a rebuilding year. 3rd loss - Coach has to go. Fickel is a prodical son, but as soon as they lost game 3 - the writing was on the wall for him and he was in a tough spot to begin with and no one cared. Ironic that his name is Fickel, that should be the nickname for Buckeye Nation. Trust me...it could be A LOT worse for you...you could live in Illinois!

Very true, dc.
This is a fan base that once had small plane fly over Ohio Stadium during a game pulling banner that read, "GOODBYE WOODY" - and it wasn't meant in a nice way.

In terms of a kid saying this, I'll agree that at its literal meaning, it can be pretty insulting to a coaching staff or fanbase. However, this phrase gets used so much that it has pretty much lost all meaning and is basically a response for when you don't know what else to say.

"We lost that one in the weight room." I don't have an issue with this particular phrase and I have used it in the past. There is a lot of truth behind it; the opponent hit the weights in the off-season, they were bigger, faster and stronger than us and it showed. We played a tight first half with the #2 team in the state this year (tied at half, lost by 30+..). Their dedication to the weight room showed through in the third and fourth quarter. We were faster than they were but they were strong kids. They just beat the hell out of physically.

"We lost that one in the weight room." This might not be coach speak if your kids are pancaked and flung around like rag dolls for four quarters. "we lost this game in the spring" is also considered coach speak. I find that to be an accurate assessment in some situations as well.

What does, "they wanted it more" mean anyway?

What does, "they wanted it more" mean anyway? Genuinely one of my least favorite lines in all of sports particularly because it is usually used in big games or pressure situations when those involved all "want it." Anytime I hear an announcer or coach say "It's about who wants it more" I want to drop an elbow from the rafters. As for the player, he lost a huge game after a second half collapse, season aspirations done, I wouldn't be upset as his coach as that's a tough spot to put an athlete in...beats some people who throw the team under the buss.
