curious how others group and name their personnel packages. i use a 2 number system. the first number indicates the number of receivers in the game. 2nd number indicates the number of backs.
41 = 4 wr / 1 rb / 0 te 31 = 3 wr / 1 rb / 1 te [te (y) replaces 4th rec] 21 = 2 wr / 1 rb / 2 te [2nd te repaces 3rd rec (a)] 22 = 2 wr / 2 rb / 1 te [fb (f) replaces 3rd rec. (a)] 12 = 1 wr / 2 rb / 2 te [ 2nd te replaces x rec.] 32 = 3 wr / 2 rb / 0 te 50 = 5 wr / 0 rb / 0 te

i believe that is the best personnel system out there i wish we could do more in this area, right now we do not do enough with it, as we really don't have anyone to sub in ,, we still formation game people with the letters and numbers system for the tb and fb to move all over the field, it allows us to get in a jillion formations with only two guys having to learn the formation add ons, while the rest of the players line up on the base formation

several years ago i had to come up with something because we substititued packages so much. it got pretty hard going, "ok, jake you're in now and send david out"....blah, blah....lol. but that's how we did it. saw how other teams were doing some things, names, numbers, etc. and came up with this because i thought it was the easiest to recognize, remember, talk with. it was picked up by the kids in, oh....'bout 2 minutes..... even if you are a team that only goes from traditional 2back personnel to a 1back/te package, the numbering system holds true and makes it easy to use. now, this system refers only to the actual players in the game not the formation call.

You have a good system, but we've only got about 20 kids on varsity. So what we've got is what we've got.

completely understand the small numbers thing. but, the premise really isn't about getting mass substitutions into the game. we just use it as a way to easily call our te in to and out of the game (31....41) no one else is affected, so that really is just 12 kids.....13 when you add the 2-back (22).

curious how you call formation & play? and do you call from sideline.. ex. 50, 50 and your players know that is their package?
we use package names to get personnel on the field pretty basic. pro.. 1 te on the field right/left etc.... colors.. no te 1 back ,,spread, trips, twins (strength side givin by specific color)red/blue etc... big.. 2 te

the package is not involved in the play call in any way. we stay in a package until a change is made so now need to call out the package each time.
may start a series like this:
from sideline we huddle on me and i call out the package we will start in...'22, 22'....then give the form/play and send 'em out. may stay in 22 so just call next play without doing anything special want to change to 31....yell '31, 31' to alert A receiver he's in...he'll take play or i'll signal in....as he enters he's yelling 31, 31...
not much to it.

all our one back sets are color coded:
blue : 4 wide doubles white : trips and one wr opposite green : trips with a te black : pro twins with a te gold : two tite, one back (ace) red : pro with twins to te side
when we go from our basic i formation to our one back package, we call for colors and switch out with receivers.

so package indicates how many receivers AND which receivers? so the X receiver in blue might be different than the X receiver in white? i've done that with lower levels before when i was trying to get everyone in the game. never had that many playmakers on the varsity level.....maybe i'm misunderstanding , though...can you clarify?

Everybody's got their own systems that work great for them, I've used the same one in twod different places. We package this way:
10 = 1 rb, 0 te 11 = 1 rb, 1 te 12 = 1 rb, 1 te 20 = 1 rb, 0 te 21 = 2 rb, 1 te 22 = 2 rb, 2 te 30 = 3 rb, 0 te 31 = 3 rb, 1 te 32 = 3 rb, 2 te

the package is not part of the play call. that is simply who is on the field. now, for the most part, formations are package specific.... (i.e. "right" is a 41 formation.) we call out the package to indicate who we want on the field. then, play is sent in. typical 31 package call. "R Twins 53 Nevada" (pass) "L Pro 29 Zone" (run)

I wish we could do that. We just don't have any subs. If we go four wide our TE and FBor TB will split out. Just can't find too many good WR's on our campus right now.

Coach if we are 4 wide, then believe our TB and WB are the WR's

Coach Huey, How do you call a no FL package for short yardage. 3 TE/2 back or 2 TE/3 back.

Coach Huey, How do you call a no FL package for short yardage. 3 TE/2 back or 2 TE/3 back. we refer to that as "Stack" as our goalline formation is the Stack I. occassionally we will have "bastard" packages for specific plays or schemes. we just give these names.

we are a one back team most of the time, when we do go into two backs in the backfield, the slotted "r" (rb) becomes the tailback in the "I", as a base we alway's have two backs in the game in our all of our one or two back formations. To alert X,Y,Z we use "open" (wr comes in for Y if Y isn't athlete enough to split out), "tight", (two tights- X comes out), base= 2wrs, 1te, 2 backs, one of which is usually slotted. In our empty set, the two backs become the slots. This simple Base, Open, Tight covers us.

Like Coach Huey, at the beginning of a series, the our first two tight ends, top three backs, and top three WR's (we always have 2 RBs and never use 4 or 5 WR's) know to gather around me. They listen for the yelling of the personell group. For us: "21" = 2 WR and 1 TE (often referred to as "Regular!") "12" = 1 WR and 2 TE "30" = 3 WR and 0 TE (often referred to as "Wide!") "Thunder" = 0 WR and 2 TE and 3 RB All the gathered players have to already know who is the first TE, who is the first WR, who are the first two WR, and who are the first two RB. During a series, if a new personnel group is being needed for the next play, the incoming player or players, scream out the new personnel group as they race to the huddle. The skill players in the existing huddle know to listen in order to determine if they need to stay in the huddle for the next play or leave for the sideline. Seems to work okay...best of luck to all!

Not sure, but don't most colleges that use the double-digit numbering system usually use the first number for the number of backs and the second number for the number of TEs?
21 - 2 backs, 1 TE 10 - 1 back, no TE 11 - 1 back, 1 TE 0 - no back, no TE 32 - 3 backs, 2 TEs etc, etc
Not that it matters, though. Just thinking out loud...
