I'm curious to know if anyone else here has experienced coaching with someone who is like this. This name has been associated with a coach for the last 10 years. I've coached with this coach for off and on for a total of 4 years. I never knew what a sociopath was until I looked it up the other day and I was shocked because it was right on. The kids I care for but just dont know if I can coach for someone like this. For those of you who don't know what it is here is a link: Just read the summary. www.mcafee.cc/Bin/sb.html

I worked for a guy like that last year. There's always going to be kids that need your help. I was threatened with my job 8 times before the 1st game last year b/c his son played the position I coached and he was horrendous (also didn't help that the HC also coached the position I did when he was working through the ranks). I took almost an 18 k pay cut and am living nearly pay check to pay check but I'm so much happier. The ones that suffer are the kids. Guys like that will continually change and tweak things and keep the kids confused as well ans running off good coaches; all the while it's not their fault, it's someone else's.

Coaches like that are defiantly a black on the football coaching fraternity.

I college I took Abnormal Psychology. The Professor actually made us read the complete text books( who one of the authors)from cover to cover.
on the chalk board the first day of class he wrote " At Some Point in this Book You will match one of the profiles of abnormal psychology and that is okay. Sane people question their sanity "

I don't know about being a sociopath, but I worked for a head coach about 5 years ago who is a complete narcissist. Guy literally believes the world revolves around him and that everyone else in the community exists simply to serve his needs.

I would say most D 1 College Coaches be it Football or Basketball are narcissists and major manipulators. May fav is convention time when you see the christian touting coaches at the strip clubs.

Delta.....I didn't know we coached together! But seriously folks.....I have coached and worked with people like this. They are no fun. One was almost like a Saturday Night Live character if they did sketch about the subject.

Mine's not a sociopath, but he lies and cheats and the whole district is ready to kill him.
I coach at the zoo...

No, but all this psychological banter reminds me of when I was in College and I was seeing the best looking girl on campus for about 4 months then somebody stole my binoculars. so she was in the female dorm right across from you and the showers were just down a few doors.

By the definition that I have received from others on this board, all HC's are sociopaths by the fact he is above questioning, and you are a bad assistant for even bringing the subject up.

I've coached under someone who was a world-class a$$hole and made me hate my job, but I don't think he qualifies as a sociopath. He was more than capable of being friendly and funny and empathetic, but he just didn't give a **** about your feelings or self esteem while doing football related things. I also spent this season with a position coach who could absolutely be considered a sociopath and it was remarkable to watch. He managed to manipulate the situation around him so consistently and thoroughly that a psychologist would have a field day with him. No regard for anyone else except himself and the ends always justified the means. I'm glad I worked with him early on in my career because now I've got a good idea of what to look for in the future.

I work for one now. Can't believe anything that comes out of his mouth. If we spent half the energy we do, sifting through all the lies & discipline problems he refuses to address, we would win a state championship. Plus, we would have a blast in the process. It is truly a shame.

My first varsity job.
First week of two a days, cusses out two different coaches in front of the kids.
Second Monday of two a days, gets put in mental hospital.
Second Friday of two a days, gets out of mental hospital, coaches in scrimmage.
Saturday asks black lady and her two elementary kids to move in with him. (He is a 60 year old white coach that lives with his O.C. and D.C. in three bedroom house a half mile from school.)
1st Monday of school resigns from AD/HFC
1st Tuesday shows up to emergency school board meeting with news camera and lawyers saying school forced him to resign due to pressure he was married to black lady.
1st Thursday of school, shows up to be reinstated at school board meeting drunk and ends up not getting reinstated
1st Friday of school, played in first game of season with interm coach that had one total year coaching under his belt.
This guy still lived in the same house and drove this lady's kids to school every day.
Everyday, I told me wife "you won't believe what happened today...."

I have never coached for someone quite this colorful, but I do personally know a guy that is a head coach/AD in our area that is apparently out of his mind, but you would never know it just knowing him casually like I do. On the surface and just talking to him, he's a nice enough guy, mans-man type, knows his football, runs a good program, etc etc. I have, however, seen texts he has sent to other people (women mostly) that run the gamut of telling them how he can't stop crying and is contemplating suicide because he thinks some of the kids at his school think he's gay allllllll the way to telling a girl that she's just as stupid and jealous of him as all the coaches that have fired him/refused to hire him in the past.
Its scary to think some of the "normal" people you think you know have a mad man lurking just below the surface.

And cclement thought he coached at the zoo... Was it at least better when he was not there? or were the OC and DC (have to assume they were his buddies) the same way?

The interm HFC (former OC) began dating a high school girl. Another coach began having relations with high school principal's wife. Supt married ex wife of school board president, head baseball coach was replaced by janitor and middle school principal.
I don't know if the chemistry got better, but it was definitly interesting everyday.
