I saw on the hudl blog someone wrote an article about using quizzes to help make sure their players are prepared. Do any of you guys use quizzes this way? Our 9th graders seem to lack some of the basic football knowledge that I think is necessary (WRs not knowing whether they need to be on or off, etc) and I think quizzes might help with this. Thoughts?

I test my linemen the Thursdays before games. I've been blessed enough to have guys that do well on the test and blessed enough too that if one of them fail the test someone else is right there to play for them.

We do the same thing with every position. It gives me a chance to assess what our players know (and what I'm thus confident in them being able to execute). It also gives the kids an opportunity to learn from and clarify their knowledge from the correction/review process.

Im so-son on the whole quiz thing; offseason, when putting things in just to make sure they got the general stuff down. But Ive worked with coaches who each week give out written quizzes every week; the probelm is that the coach would treat the players ability to draw up their responsibilities as proof that they knew what to do. Theres a big difference in being able to draw something up on paper and being able to react to something in a split second. Moreover, the players spend a lot of time trying to draw things up as opposed to studying film; and then, they too feel as if they are mentally prepared because they can draw up their jobs.

I think being able to use these new testing websites has great potential. We started playing around with taking quick screen shots of video to see if we can use quizzes to help get the kids engaged. We've done the paper quizzes in the past, but it a pain to manage. These sites distribute, collect, score and give summaries of the results. Maybe it's only 10 basic questions per week about the gameplan. We like the efficiency. We're going to try it out this off-season as a follow up quiz to our Hudl playbook presentations. Here's one we just started as a sample - www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/story.php?title=duxbury-formations-2011

I definitely wouldn't base playing time based off how they do on these. From a coaching standpoint, they would present the issues/assignments that coaches need to address more in practice, or what that player(s) need to focus on more. If a lot of players get a particular part wrong, that means we gotta focus more on that point in practice. It would definitely tell you which of your players are probably mentally ready to play, but that doesn't mean they should.

I test the OL every Wednesday. They must know their job on every play and all other OL blocking assignment also. I draw up the fronts we will be facing that week...our formations...and play cards for them to draw on. I cover protections and blitzes etc for pass pro. I test on Wednesday so I can grade and then we can meet for any questions on Thursday.

It's a quick way to gauge their comprehension to allow us to focus on specific areas. I'm fairly confident it'll be a good way to check knowledge of our O and D playbooks in the pre-season. Not too sure if it'll be practical during a game week.

Mav, this seems like a great tool for offseason and preseason teaching. Would you send the link out to each kid? Post it on your website?
anyway to run quizes thru hudl?

Mav, this seems like a great tool for offseason and preseason teaching. Would you send the link out to each kid? Post it on your website? anyway to run quizes thru hudl? I'll send the players the quiz link through Hudl's messaging system. I like to use the texting/email combination to ensure they get it. I used to send email and the kids would say 'I haven't checked my email in weeks'. The kids immediately check their phones when they get a text. I'll bet most of the kids will just click the link in the text message and take the quiz right on their phone. I'm still amazed how many players watch cutups on their phones/devices. Their attitude seems to be 'email and computers are for old people'

Same here. Kids never even get the emails Hudl sends when playlists are shared.. I usually test em all when the games are up... That text messaging thru Hudl. Does that come with the Gold package (or whatever the middle one is that has presentation maker) ?

Mav, that is a great resource!
I am thinking about doing that before we start spring ball to assess what my returners remember.

I'd highly recommend any staff, Hudl or not, use group texting to communicate with their players. It's the only way to consistently get your messages to kids these days.

I'm going to see if I can find a useful way to incorporate this concept. Much better than the old school way I used to do it. I like the instant feedback and the fact that you can offer an explanation on the spot. Only concern for me is the ability for one kid to take the quiz and then share all of the right answers with the rest of his position. I guess if your kids are doing that, then maybe you probably have bigger problems to worry about than the quiz.
