Coaches:
I have a team manager that we are going to give the ball used from our last game. This is a special kid who could not play the last four years because he is in need of a liver transplant. This game ball will mean a lot to this young man...
My question. What do you use to paint the side of the ball white? Is it indeed a paint, or is it some sort of leather dye? Will we be able to sign the ball after it is painted or dyed..??
Any help would be appreciated. So far, I have gotten conflicting information from two different paint stores.....One said use a latex paint, another said use an oil based paint.

white latex paint. just like you would use in a bedroom. It may take a few coats.

Call your dealer. All of the major ball companies have "Autograph" balls with a white side. You can even order custom graphics and text.

RMW just gave me some information on what they used on a game ball, paint, and he gave me a contact to try in the Chicago area.
I have heard from a couple of people and they have said to use latex paint, just like you suggested. I thank you for the time and information.
I could buy one of those autograph balls, as was suggested, but because this kid is special, and because he knows the particular ball we used for the last game (it was different from our other game balls) I would like to give it to him. I think it would mean a little more to him.

Insted of paint, you could get some of those white or silver paint pens. I don't know how well it would stick but you could try it on a practice ball first.

Buy an autograph ball from your local sporting goods dealer for this kid it looks better and can be signed easier. The only reason to paint one is if it is a particular ball that was used for a play( ex. td, int., game winning fg or play) Or for winning a milestone game.

Coaches -
Thank you for all the responses and help.
I was able to get in contact with the Chicago Bears equipment manager, who in turn, put me in contact with the company that does the Bears game balls.
They use a High Gloss, Oil Based white paint. The trick is using at least two or more coats, and waiting at least 12-14 hours between coats. Then they use a sharpie pen to write any information on the ball.
