We have a portion of the team participate in the 7 on 7 leagues during the summer but I was thinking about what we can do for our Linemen.
I have heard of Linemen Competitions but haven't participated. Wondering if anyone here has done any thing like this with other schools and if so I am looking for info so I don't necessarily have to reinvent the wheel.
Thoughts?

A deal we're looking at attending this summer has the 7 on 7 tournament and the linemen challenge going on at the same time. I think it's great, when we're not playing 7 on 7 our guys can guy support our linemen and vice versa. So often these linemen are forgotten about and don't get a chance to compete in non-padded situations like the skill guys do. Here are the events they have listed for the linemen challenge:
1. Bench- 185 lbs. total reps (highest total) 2. NFL Shuttle Run-total run time (lowest total) 3. Buffalo Relay- 5x200 (lowest time) 4. Tug-a-War –draw of numbers (last team standing) 5. Dumbbell Relay- 50 yards (lowest time) 6. Obstacle Course- weighted sled pull, shuffle, sled push , bear crawl, belly crawl, tires (lowest time) 7. Banana Eating Contest- bananas peeled and eaten (one minute time limit)

To add to the above list . . . we've done these too.
1. Tractor Tire Flip relay races 2. Jeep Pull for time (Tie large rope to Jeep bumper and individual pulls it, while being anchored in a large tractor tire) 3. 1 on 1's pass rush vs pass block. We called them "Show Me's" (show me what you've got)

We attend one each year. It has not value in terms of how good your team will actually be in the upcoming season but we do use it as a reward for the big guys who put their time into our off season program. Some additional events not mentioned: 1. 20 yard 5 man sled push. (lowest time wins) 2. Shiver ball relay- Make an obstacle course for the linemen to push the shiver ball around, lowest time wins 3. Sumo- Use a DL pass rush hoop, Have the Linemen get chest to chest. On whistle they attempt to push the other guy outside the ring. 4. Feed them- Always fun for the big guys!

We have participated in Lineman Challenges hosted by other schools, and we have hosted them in years past. An event that hasn't been mentioned so far is the BFS dot drill - lowest total team time wins. We usually used the 5 best scores from a team to determine the team score for a particular event. The best part of the deal -- without fail, the tug-of-war brings everything else to a screeching halt. The 'talent' position kids playing in the 7-on-7 games stop what they're doing to watch and cheer the linemen from their team.

Mike Pope's Hawg Tuff group has hosted a number of them in NC/SC and Joe Kilby at Apex High School in NC has put them on (and is putting another on in May). You might check with those guys about how they go about it.

We run a 7 on 7 competition and Big Man Competition every summer. The Big Man Competition consists of Bench press, Big tire relay, Fire truck push, tug-a-war, hamburger eating contest, tire, and tire throw. It is a pretty fun event for everyone, we get big crowds to watch the event as well.

1) Tire flip is always a big one, plus you can use this as a relay 2) Ive seen standing military press used a lot (because its a weightlifting that can be done outside) 3)Weighted sled pull we've used before. 4) Plate walk, especially with 45 lb bumper plates 5) Some sorte of weighted stone throw 6) Iron cross with hammers 7) Sledge hammer swing (there are specific rules you have to watch for this) 8) Random timed agility course 9) Team tug of war 10) Team log (or some other heavy awkwardly weighted object) carry 11) One on One pass pros (more just to show individual stuff)

We did one in conjunction with a 7-on-7 tournament we hosted a few years back.
We had five different competitions.
1. 5-man Tire Flip Relay 2. 185-pound Bench Press 3. 5-man sled push (20-yards) 4. Obstacle course 5. 4x100 relay

We hosted the Inaugural Bulldog Big Man Battle last summer. We will hold the 2nd Annual this summer as it was a huge success and a ton of fun. We had 10 events with 5 individual events and 5 team events. The individual events were bench press (135# for reps), pro shuttle, medicine ball throw, tire flip, and a nasty obstacle course. The team events were 5-man sled push, farmer's walk relay, bus push, team tire flip and tug-of-war. It was pretty cool as the tug was the last event and actually determined the winning team.
And yes, feed the bigs.

The one reason I don't like bench press at linemen challenge is that for the most part we are outside, and I hate dragging kids into the weight room. I also like the idea of having everything being team oriented. So when we do push press we don't do individual times, rather each player has to do 10; and then pass it to a teammate (you time how long it takes a team to get through 5 competitors).
If we try to preach that an o-line is as strong as its weakest link, then I think this helps further that idea.

Did one last year at my team camp while the pu$$ies were doing 7 on 7
We did relay races, farmers walk relay races, tire flips
and we would do run block and pass pro 1 on 1s every day
this year my camp will be much bigger so I would like to do tug o war and some other stuff too

Works great for us as the track facilities are right there around the football field.

GO TO THE www.hawgtuff.net WEBSITE ON THE HOMEPAGE AND WE HAVE A GREAT LINEMEN CHALLENGE PDF SHOWING ALL THE EVENTS WE DO AT THE HAWG TUFF LINEMEN CHALLEGE. I ALSO HAVE AN EXCEL SPREADSHEET THAT I WILL EMAIL TO YOU THAT YOU PUT THE INDIVIDUAL KIDS IN THE SHEETS AND IT ADDS UP AND AVERAGES THE EVENTS. YOU GET YOUR TEAM CHALLENGE RESULTS WITH THIS AND THEN YOU HAD TO GO THRU THE EVENTS TO GET YOU FIRST SECOND AND THIRD PLACE KIDS IN EACH EVENT. THE LINEMEN CHALLENGE IS A GREAT MOTIVATOR FOR YOUR KIDS. ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN.

The best lineman challenge I have seen is who can throw the shot put and the discus the farthest.
