I just moved to a school that has push to talk headsets. I know that these will drive me crazy this year, but don't have it in my budget to buy new headsets. I am wondering if any of you have any headsets that you might be looking to get rid of. Let me know what you have.

We have Porta Phones that I would love to chuck off of a tall building. I don't think you'd want them. They have a tendancy to cut out and fade. Very tempermental. They go in for 'reconditioning' every year and keep coming back with the same frustrating problem. I put them down every game last year. We now use . . . CELL PHONES with a high minute plan.

we had Porta Crap, too.....EVERY year, we have to have them reconditioned........they cut out and completely F-- up every game.
One game, we borrowed Motorolla phones from a rival and they were SWEET!
Other times, we had to use cell phones and security walkie talkies.

We just order 8 wireless headsets from CoachComm. The rep was in yesterday and we tried them out...SWEET! They have two channels to talk on (offense and defense) and you can switch to either one or if the HC wants everyone on one line then we can all switch over. Apparently no interference and takes 3 seconds to set up. They can run for 5 hours and can be plugged in to charge during halftime too.

we bought a porta phone 5 man system last fall and had no problems at all. Did most of the problems occur right away or over a period of time??

Other times, we had to use cell phones and security walkie talkies. We did that this last year. Both myself and the HC had nextels so I went to Target and picked up 2 inexpensive headsets, the one mic one ear piece type. Cost me about 25 bucks for both. We just used the direct connect back and forth and we were the only JV team in our league with headsets. Helped us big time just on what players were slacking off or in wrong position. Not so much on play strategy. Getting JV kids lined up right during timeouts and quarter changes helps way more than seeing it on film after the fact.

We purchased a new Porta Phone 4 piece set last season and I have to say I am less than satisfied with it. You are supposed to be able to have either a 4 way conversation or switch to an offense/defense scenario. Basically ours is stuck in 4-way all the time. Also the batteries tend to wear down rather quickly and we had them die during two different games last season. Called the company and really got no satisfaction there.
Advice-look into something else. I bought these on a recommendation from another coach in lew of the Motorola set of the type I had used at my former school and have regretted it ever since.

We have the Porta Phone CX5 (five head sets, HC can switch from offense to defense). I like them but they are finicky - must make sure they are charged properly, turned on according to correct procedure before game and at halftime. Bounce passing them off the ground does not help. Service has been good.
They are better than Lafayette I had at a previous school and as good as the Telex system we used when I was an assistant in college in the mid-late '90s. Both of those systems could've upgraded by now, of course. I have no experience with Motorola or Coach Comm., so can't compare those.

Ditto. Same exact experience with Porta Phone. We looked at 4 Telex, but the best we could get them for is $4300. Maybe we look into Coach Comm.

Coaches,
If you don't mind, can you tell me what model Porta Phones you all have. We are looking at purchasing the Scrambler UHF 3000 and we WERE going to purchase them until I saw this post. Do any of you all have this type of Porta Phone and if you do can you describe your experience with it to me? Let me put it to you like this.....our football budget is extremely tight and if you had to choose between buying a Porta Phone or spending $300 more for a Coach's Comm, what would you recommend? Thanks in advance.
Sincerely, Coach D

Coach,
The entry level for 3 is about $1000 and it goes up from there (this is for the Crossfire). I think they are around $350 a piece if you are interested in the Crossfire model.
Sincerely, Coach D

We have had Porta-Phone for five years and every year we send them to be reconditioned. And every year it is the same old thing. Batteries would die or push button would not work properly. They did not work at some point every game we played last year. I had a thorough reconditioning this off season and if we have the same problem then we will get CoachComm. These guys (CoachComm) are great and they have tremendouse customer service. We bought some other things from them this off season and they were very professional and very customer service oriented. No pressure sales reps who just want to meet your needs and not try to make you spend more. CoachComm's prices are very competitive with Porta-Phone and they now offer the Telex wireless system as well. I would highly recommend them.
Over and out, DCTIGER

Just from my experience, the Porta Phones, we went to great lengths to appease the transistor Gods to get them to work properly...have them charged 4 days prior, meticulously aligning the atenaes towards the goal posts, turning on according to the Bomb Sequence detail they provide, never letting the Sophmore staff use it, never turning them off during the game, etc...we try everything, but after about game 3 or 4, they consistently just CUT OUT with no warning...........get tons of interference....a complete nightmare. A few times when I just had to get out of the box, because it was pointless for me to be up there.
I'm afraid I don't know the model number but they were the 5 man unit (with backups) that were wireless (no spools of wire connectors).

Coaches,
Thank you for the input. It's so hard because we are looking for a good set of headsets, but the fact that we don't have much money to play with is a big factor. We will continue to look into the CoachComm see what will work for us. Thank you guys for the input.
Sincerely, Coach D

PS, our porta phones crapped out during three games for us...our only three losses and all came when we were driving. I was up in the box and couldnt call a play. For the rest of the game I'm on the sideline and cant see the field the same way.

Our experience is about the same as Brophy's. We took care of them EXACTLY as requested. We followed their ridiculous startup sequence just as they specified. During EVERY SINGLE game they stopped working at some point in the first half. First, they start cutting in and out. Jiggle the wires, turn them off, and they start working again. Then, after some short period of time, they just stop working altogther. And we have six headsets for four coaches. Intermix them, Swap them out. It didn't matter.
And I'm sorry, but they are just freaking radios. $10 walkie-talkies from Walmart work better and are more reliable. We have sent them in every year for reconditioning and every year they come back with the same annoying problems. Just a horrible product. I don't know about CoachComm, but seriously, anything has to be better.
