We are a medium size 4a who in my 10 years here have never had the numbers to truly two platoon, but now our numbers are up and the HC wants to try it next year. We are in the midst of the 'draft' for players right now. I coach the O-line and am having to give up a lot of guys that I would normally use. We (the offense) picked the QB, RB and one WR first then the defense took their first 11. The offense then took the 8 remaining positions. The Defense then took another 11. We chose our seconds and so on from there.
What are some other ways you guys have split up offense and defense. Also what are the biggest benefits and drawbacks from the two plartoon system. And how many 'crossover' players are used if any at all.

Simply choosing which players we will use on offense and which will be used on defense.

We always looked at the kids based on their value . . . instead of looking at was it the offense or defenses turn to choose we looked at, would the kid help us more as a TE or a LB. QB or Safety, etc. Also, we considered their backups . . . for example a kid may be of more value to the offense, but there is no one to play on defense behind him so he has to go that way. I think you really need to look at it wholistically.

same thing as coachbw. We look at where they help us the most and what kind of a dropoff their backup would be. We don't go completely platoon, but I would like to get as close as possible. Right now, we are trying to decide where our kids will "focus" their practice time. Most of them will still play both ways, but we are hoping that they can get more of a rest on one side of the ball or another.

I am hoping that after we finish 'drafting' for players we will look at it and say who needs to shift from one side to the other to make us a better overall team.

Bill this is last season is my second two platooning and I love it. At first you look at the kids you have on the oline and say that they are only second teamers. But you will have those kids from now on and able to coach them for 2 hours a day during football. We have seen in the last two years that our great players don't get worn down and our average players become good players because of specialization. That is better than having your great player become a average player because he is tired going both ways. You also get more time to practice to get those kids better. It also gets more kids involved in playing. Our DC keeps harping that any kid can be an offensive player after the big three but on defense you can't hide anyone. We have been 16-6 since starting the platooning and the 3 years before platooning they were 9-21. Alot of that had to do with the athletes but the specialization helped. We have great numbers for a mid 3a and carry 54 on Varsity and should have 120+ next year for football.

Also keep in mind that just because you two platoon, that doens't mean you can't have one or two players go both ways if you need to fill gaps.

We two platooned this last year for the first time at our school and in my opinion the offensive line is the primary position it helped was the O-line. If at all possible it is very beneficial those guys only go one way. There will always be a couple guys that can help you on both sides of the ball. Figure out the way for those guys to get some work on each side.
The main problem we faced is we werent deep enough coaching wise. We ended up being short handed coaching and had to rely on some guys that just werent ready to be turned loose with their own position. That is the main complaint I had. If you have enough quality coaches and good kids more power to you. If you have any other questions or concernes that I did not touch on here, let me know. I'm no expert on it, but I know a bunch of pros and cons for the 2 platoon system after last season.

I believe it is best to platoon as low as you can go. if you can platoon the jv you are light years ahead of you opponent.
marc mcelroy in his no huddle book and video discussed how they divide it up. offense got center, qb, rb and wr. defense got to pick the rest.
you have to remember now, your olineman are going to get twice the learning and twice the reps.
lavern pottinger how was a nohuddle wishbone guy told me average players can become great with the amount of reps you get when you platoon.

The talent level at our school has dropped off in the 6 years I have been there. When I first got there NO ONE played both ways. Offense got to pick the QB and RB and defense got everyone else first. We were very good using that for a couple years. As the talent went down we started playing a couple of players both ways and working lesser athletes to spell them and brought along the backups until they good play. This last year we started out playing about 7 or 8 kids both ways. We lost our first 2 games b/c we were just too tired to finish. There was simply not enough numbers to get all of our kids off the field on both sides, but we sucked it up and put some lesser players on the OL and gave the defese our two best OL. We also played many more lesser athletes at the skill positions, and they struggled at first but continued to get better. We ended up 10-3 and lost in the 3rd rd of the playoffs, after blowing a 16 point lead in the 4th qtr thanks to 3 turnovers and a KO return for a TD. After that I will always be a believer in two platooning if at all possible.
