I was wondering if someone can explain the differences between the 3-3 defense and the 3-5, aside from the obvious that the 3-3 has two more DBs than the 3-5 and the 3-5 has two more LBs than the 3-3. Thanks in advance.

That's pretty much it, dude. It's like the difference between the:
3-4 and the 5-2 Are they DE's or OLB's?
4-4 and 4-2 Are they safeties or OLB's?
It's really just another way of making things more complicated than they need to be.

At the clinic I recently went to the Webber International coach made sense the way he said it. There's two main types of defenses, the one where you put 4 guys hands in the dirt and the one where you put 3 guys hands in the dirt. And I think its true. The 3-3 can look like a 3-5 or 3-4 or 5-3, the 4-3 can look like a 4-4, 4-2, and so on and so fourth and I think thats true.

So, in teaching fundamentals, they are pretty much the same? I would like to go to a 30 defense due to my team's lack in size and I just wanted to try to figure out which would be better for my school.

to run the 4-3 you only need 1 big guy and thats your 3 tech.

Thanks in advance. Flex, We run the 3-5 and the way I see it the 3-3 probably does a whole lot more with their coverages by rotating the OLB's into deep safety positions and so forth. In the 3-5 our OLB's pretty much stay put as force players and we are going to be in cover 3, 0, or 3/3 ninety % of the time. I ran the 4-3 for many years and it is a great defense, before switching to the 3-5 and I have no regrets. We are very aggressive with it and the kids love running it.

I think it primarily revolves around the type of coverage you want to run out of it, as others have mentioned. If you want to stay in a Cover 3 look with your two safeties rolled up, I would call you a 3-5. If you are very multiple in your coverages b/c you have athletic/agressive DB's are those safety positions, then I'd say 3-3. IMO

We keep our SS's as wide as they need to be where a 44 will sometimes play inside leverage with their OLB's.. Also, most 5-2 defenses we face has their Ends with their hands in the dirt where as the OLBs in a 3-4 are stand up.. I rarely see 5-2 ends with much pass coverage responsibility.
