Coaches, I do not want to start a political debate whatsoever but have an athlete that colleges are interested in. Problem is he is not a legal immigrant (parents moved here when he was very young) so he is not allowed any federal financial aid. I know that there are some states that offer in state rates but is there any way a school can offer him an athletic scholarship? What if it's a private school?
This is uncharted territory for me so any help would be great.

When I was coaching college ball we had a couple of kids we were recruiting in the past, and they were very limited on aid they could receive. They did need to get a student visa, and had to prove they had the means to pay for school. Once they got a student visa I believe we could give them some football money. I was at a private school at the time.
Your best bet is to contact a couple of schools and ask the process. Also reach out to a legal aid society or consulate. They can often provide free or cheap legal advice.

Is he not eligible for citizenship 15 years later? I have no idea how US immigration policy works, sorry.
