We get 10 days of spring ball where I'm at. What are your thoughts on emphasis? Lots of Indy or more group? We will have same terminology just different looks from last year. Our practices are limited to 2 hrs.

I'd crush the fundamentals. Having been in both North and South Carolina, Spring Ball can be a luxury. Don't waste a single rep and get back to the basics and slow the teaching down while still making it fun for the new guys that come out. Just my two cents.

I hate all of you guys down south that get spring ball! I sure wish up north (Illinois) that we could have something like this...

I agree. Spring ball would be nice but as long as nobody up here has it, the playing field is more even.

Ogre, Any idea why it is not allowed in IL? I am here as well and we have a brand new coaching staff at a school that needs fundamentals training. They also need to forget everything they were taught by the previous regime, but that is a different story.

I have been doing spring ball here in Oklahoma for a long time and i agree with everyone else. Even the years that we had a majority of returning starters, we still started over from scratch. We would also evaluate what we really needed to improve upon the most for our district games and made sure to focus on that. A final note, make sure every kid in your program, all the way to the last back-up, gets reps on your bread and butter plays.

If I remember correctly baseball and track had so many snow outs when I was growing up in Ohio and other things that the season damn near lasted to summer. There is the fear that you would make the kids choose between a spring sport and spring football, that it would impeed on the other sports. Here we may miss a baseball player or two and a track guy if they got far in districts but we get most of our kids, wouldn't necessarily be the case up North where weather reeks havoc on the early part of the season.

I don't really know the exact details, but I know coaches have lobbied for it and it's been voted down a few times when it's been put up for a change with the IHSA. I do know there are many schools who have "open gyms" in the winter and spring where a lot of install is used. Hell, there is a catholic school in our league that someone gets away with a class that is just called "football class" or something along those lines where they just practice in the gym essentially. People always find a way to play the grey areas.

We don't have it in Kansas and I've been told it's because we "care more about all sports" and don't want to hurt them (other sports). ;D
Just what I've been told. I hope it makes it here eventually.

In California you can practice as much as you want in the spring or summer, just no pads until 25 days before your first game (I think it's 25 days). And you have to have a 3 consecutive week dead period sometime in the summer.

Here you have to choose between 10 days of spring ball or start 4 days earlier than those that do spring ball in August. Less days, but I like the earlier start time so you can carry those skills/conditioning right into the season.
