For years was a 2 platoon guy. Never really worked. Went one platoon this year and got my best players on the field. Made it to the state semifinals. Will not 2 platoon again..
Just looking at some schedules of guys that do it. Share thoughts...
Some guys Varsity/JV split... Flip
Offense/Defense split.... Flip
Split team in half.... Flip
Offense Day / Defense Day
Again anyone willing to share what they did especially if you have had some success with it (Playoffs, districts, states...).
Again I not need this to turn into a debate over one platoon v 2 platoon... Just ways to get the most out of practice.

Some of your planning will depend on how many coaches you have, how many players, when does JV play.
Normally we do not have JV (Sophomores) practice with Varsity but we did end of season last Fall due to numbers. They play Thursdays.
We have three paid Varsity positions (including HC), two JV, two Frosh.
We do both Defense and Offense each day. Monday and Wednesday emphasize Defense, Tuesday Offense. Thursday Pre-Game, Review Defense and Offense (including Kicking Game), Special Situations.

We're a modified 1/2 platoon team - meaning everyone has at least one position but our really good football players have both an O and a D position. We do both JV and Varsity together M-W. We would always have the 2-way guys go to their O position on Monday, their D position on Tuesday and they'd split time in indy on Wednesday.
We have an offensive and a defensive team time every day. When it was team D for the varsity, the offensive position coaches went with the JV to run their team O while the OC stayed with the varsity to run the scout O. When it was team O, the defensive position coaches went with the JV to do team D while the DC ran scout D.
As blb said, its important to have a large # of coaches to be able to do this - we have 8 varsity/jv guys and we're one of the smaller staffs around here.

blb, Does that mean you have 7 total coaches on staff? (3 varsity, 2 JV, 2 Fresh). Something we were looking at doing this spring, but we would need around 6 coaches to do is an A & B team type. Both teams would consist of starters, varsity, and JV/Fresh players. While team A is working on Offense (Indy and group) team B will work on Defense (Indy and group). They will come together for a Team period. Then they will swap with Team B going to offense and A going to defense. Was wondering if anyone has done anything similar. We split up our team periods this way in the past to be able to give better looks on the scout team, but now we are looking at doing it for everything, but might find out it wont work for us.

We have seven paid positions.
We had nine total coaches last year (three at each level) because we had two volunteers.
We do not have Spring Football in our state.

We do an offense and a defense day: Monday- Lift, Film, Scout report/Game plan Tuesday- Offense Wednesday-Defense Thursday- Lift, Walk-through. Same for us, Mondays JV play so sometimes we have 15 guys on Monday so can't do much on field stuff. We have a 20 min. team session before indy and all that working on the opposite side of the ball (Tuesday 20- min D and so on).

Here's what we do/did inseason Monday Defense 80 min...special teams 20 min..offense 20 min.. Tues reverse Wed Defense 45 min..offense 45 special teams 20 Thursday pregame
we backed off after game 6/7
The JV were w/ us most of the time until we went to team..they then went and split..sometimes with the frosh
Last year during doubles for a few days we divided the squad in 1/2 the best 60 and then the rest (75)..we also divided coaches offense and defense..we got a TON of indy work in..it was especially good for the younger guys...

We seem to be in the minority here but we go an hour of offense while JV does defense on mon to wed. We warmup and do special teams and conditioning on some but not all of these days. JVs play thurs. varsity has walk thru with an emphasis on special teams and special situations. We are 25-4 the last two years doing this. How we break down that time varies each day. For example, Mondays not much contact, lots of walk thru and teaching game plan. Tuesday a lot of Indy and group time, shorter team periods. Heavy contact. Wednesday more team periods less Indy time, but into time is very intense especially for OL and DL

We only have about 25-35 on our team total. That's Fresh-Sr, For those who have your teams split (varsity/JV/Fr), what would you do in your scheduling if they all had to be together? What would you do on JV/fresh game days (Mon)? In the past we have done different things: we have practiced everyone then feed the JV/Fr guys before their game, and we have just let them go home and just practice the 10-15 guys that did not play JV. What are your thoughts.

Veerman, I think what I would do is take everyone out and install the game plan, scouting report, work on special teams, etc......just wear shells and little to no full contact. Then take the kids that are playing JV and feed them if that's what you do. Take kids not playing JV and run them a bit (strides). Then take them and watch film. HC and coordinators stay with non JV players. All other coaches go with jv

Do you feel that lifting the day before a game affects players at all (fatigue, cramping, soreness, etc.) during the game?

When I was the OC (in the 2007-2009 seasons) we were a one platoon team that did a JV/Varsity split with one group working offense (with the 3 offensive coaches) and the other group working with the defensive coaches (three defensive coaches). The practice schedule was based on the emphasis ( as detailed by the HC) for the day and had the O group working a specific special teams component and the defensive group the appropriate component. Switch was made half way through practice with the groups. Saw great growth those years in the team.

saintrad, What were your numbers like? Did you have enough kids at each level to run two team periods simultaneously? I have been intrigued with the concept but cannot figure out how we could run team period so each group got a good look and not take a lot of time.

varsity was 20-24, JV was about the same. We had varsity doing D, JV doing O, then switched

We play our soph and JV games on Thu afternoons 3:30. Soph at same location as varsity, JV opposite. We split days:
Monday = Defense (Punt Return Team) Tuesday = Offense (Punt Team) Wednesday = PAT/FG, PAT/FG Block, Kickoff, Kick Return, 30 minutes O, 30 minutes D Thursday = Everybody except 2-way starters plays Soph or JV game (no practice with only 5-10 kids) Friday = Game Day

Monday - Film/Fundamentals Tuesday - Defense Wednesday - Offense Thursday - Special Teams/Game Walkthrough
Our T/W/Th always have what we call a "Crossover" period , usually 15-20 minutes, which allow us to work in some defense, offense or ST.
Typical Wed Practice: Period......(minutes) Dynamic Stretch (5) EDDs by position -Run (5) EDDs by position -Pass (5) 7 on 7 / Line works Pass protection (10) 9 on 7 / WRs work run blocking (10) Team w/ Situation and Quota (30) Crossover (20) Conditioning (10) Clean-up (5)

I could be wrong and I don't know your exact M and Th schedule, but do you only do 10 minutes of Indy drills per week on each side of the ball? Has that been sufficient for you?

If you add up the times, that's short of a 2 hour practice so we have some extra time if we need it. Also, we try to stay right to our schedule, but if we run over on anything it is usually our EDDs. That said, no I don't think it is enough, but I need to keep things rolling as best as I can.
*Edit.. I wrote that schedule off memory. I looked at our schedules and we have three Indy (EDDs) periods: Position specific, run, pass
