I know there have been a few threads on this already but, being a bit of a Luddite (I still don't own a cell phone), is Twitter the best bet for pure communication of information to your players?
In addition to communication, is Facebook best for fan interaction and/or selling ads?

I would use Facebook for both. If you're in an area where most of your kids do have cellphones, check out www.cel.lyIt will allow you to send out a mass text to all of your players. You don't need their numbers, and you can do it from the computer. I do this in my classroom to remind them about due dates, tests, and other things that I need to put out there, and it works out great.

rsmith,
Do they have to stop by your room and enter their #s? How do you text them if you don't have their number?

I use Twitter. Players and parents or whoever else wants to get updates just texts follow and your username to 40404 and they get every thing you tweet. It has worked real well for us.

The way cel.ly works if at some point when you have all of your players together, they register by texting a number to a certain address from their phone. Cel.ly logs it, but you don't have direct access to their numbers. For example, my Spanish 2 students joined it by texting @smithspanish2 to 23359. They got a verification asking them to make a user name, and then they were all registered. It sounds complicated but it takes literally 60 seconds or less for them to do. It really is a terrific resource. I prefer it over Facebook and Twitter because you know d*mn well that those kids have 0 chance of ever missing a text message.

Facebook is probably the better way to go because it can also be used for communication from players to coaches. We have two pages, one for fans/players (fundraising events etc) and one purely for players (which is a locked group, the coaches have admin privileges) to give training info (bad weather, bring x) The best thing-its 100% free.

Red, Im with you I don't have a facebook or twitter. I joke with my students that just cause I teach 15 year old girls doesn't mean I have to act like one.
That being written I have a buddy who started using twitter to communicate over the summer with his players and it worked fine; sou our HC decided to try it. Didn't work because very few of our kids utilized twitter. But they all had a facebook, so then he did that.
My advice, find out what works best for your players.

My understanding is that you should use facebook in suburban areas and twitter in urban areas.

My understanding is that you should use facebook in suburban areas and twitter in urban areas. ? Is that because of the demographics, or what?
