This is the question I ask of you veteran coaches....I was wondering what I should do with the situation I am in. This fall I coached at a 6A school in Illinois (1A smallest-8A largest) as a Linebacker coach and the defense we ran was a combination 40 and 50 defense with a lot of cover 3. I worked there knowing I might not be there long because I was looking for a full time teaching job and was only doing long term subbing in the fall. I recently got a full time teaching job at a 1A school and a football coaching position is part of the job. I know that I want to be a defensive cordinator in the future and I have a strong interest in the 3-3-5 defense, but the school I just started at runs a lot of 5-2 cover 2. Do I put all of my efforts in learning that defense and back the 3-3-5 on the backburner? I realize I am in no position to try and change anything being the new guy and the young guy (24 years old) so would it be best to master the 5-2 for now? I appreciate any help you guys can give!!!

Didn't you answer your own question? Your the new young guy who's in no position to try and change anything. You can however ask questions about the pro's and con's of the 5-2 cover 2 they run- what causes it problems? What are common adjustments to different offensive schemes? Ask questions, learn and make suggestions as you deem appropriate and that fall within the basic scheme and your players. That's part of being a 1st rate assistant coach- just understand once the DC or HC makes a decision support it completely and without reservation even if it is not something you'd do if the decision was yours.

Just like players, know your role! Coach as a member of the new program, be loyal to your new coach and emmerse yourself in his system so you can help them next year.
I, by no means, am an expert. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

the 30 stack is a warped version of the 5-2 but the answer for SPREAD offense... Learn as much as can about everything!

Not an expert, but I suggest being the best "5-2 cover 2" assistant coach there's ever been.. You'll learn a lot, and in the process you'll see, as others have already stated, just how similar the 2 defenses actually are.. Good luck..

Thanks for the help guys! I had a taste this year of coaches not being on the same page and I'm determined to not let it happen to me...I'm going to do my best to soak up the new system! Thanks again.
