I am wanting to know what are some of the thing that you head coaches deligate to your assistants? Are there some things you will only assign to certain assistants? What are some things that you guys assign that could be out of the norm?
Thanks for reponding!

I would delagate just about anything I could EXCEPT for academics to assistants I always wanted to have control over that...My first year i delagated after practice "conditioning but took that over this year as it seemed more effective when the HC was doing the punishment....the hardest part though is getting guys w/ the same committment level as you

Find a coordinator that is hard-working and qualified! Let him do his job on his side of the ball. Tell him he's responsible for his game planning, installation, managing of his staff, scouting reports, practice planning, etc. That takes care of alot of the x's and o's if he's good.
Let someone be responsible for those little things: making copies of scouting reports, in-season weight program, film-dubbing, etc.
Make each assistant coach choose a week and be present for freshman or your middle school games. It will look good having a varsity staff member always present, then you dont have to be there for everything.
Put an asst coach in charge of your youth camp. Let him organize it and plan it.

the hardest part though is getting guys w/ the same commitment level as you This is extremely difficult to do. Especially when you consider the number of committed coaches you need in order to build a successful program. I've been fortunate to have a couple great assistants. We gave it our all but we always believed we needed more to help our kids reach their goals.

are there any of you who let coaches handle all aspects of equipment? Ordering, organization, etc? What about apperal ordering?

I would delegate anything where they would do a better job than I, particularly when considering that I'll likely be distracted by other jobs. Also, anything where they could become better than me, or for certain secondary jobs, anything where we save time.

Two things will get you fired faster than losing: messing around with HS girls and playing games with money. At most places it takes a few years to lose enough to get fired. Both of THOSE things will not only get you fired but might get your a$$ in jail. With that in mind there's no way that I'd completely trust an assistamt with team funds.

For many years I tried to do most everything myself. I'm older (39 years of coaching) and wiser now and I delegate a great deal. My defensive coordinator is in charge of defense: he game plans, I give him the practice times and he schedules what he's going to do, he works with the defensive staff, he takes care of everything on that side of the ball. I have input, I know and approve of what he's going to do--but its his. The same is true for special teams. I take care of the offense.
I try to divide up the day-to-day duties among staff, depending on the capabilities of the various coaches. Those who are less experienced and less capable get the stuff anybody can do. Those who are more experienced get the tougher stuff. Discipline, final decisions, parents, organization, recruiting, equipment ordering (not the everyday equipement stuff) is all mine. I even delegate lots of the mundane paperwork (not eligibility, but off season stuff) to our football moms group. Everybody on staff has practice and gameday responsibilities. I give my coaches lots of input and lots of freedom to do their job--but with that comes a lot of responsibility and accountability.

At our school everything has to be ordered through the finance office with at PO and AD's signature. So yes I have a coach order all gear, equipment for us. Also fundraising too. Makes my life a lot better no doubt.
