When the season started we knew playoff teams would have to use the Rawlings ST5 ball. Most teams continued to use their other footballs and we did the same. This week we switched and I simply don't like the ball as it's kind of slick. We usually use the GST which has a nice grip. The reason we must use it is because Rawlings provides the balls for the playoffs and sponsers it. Just wanted to know your coaching opinions on being forced to use specific balls during the playoffs. All we get is 2 footballs so who makes out on this deal?

We ran into this problem 2 years ago.
First year, we chose to use our own ball during the regular season (Nike Taktician) Then at playoff time, were required to use the Wilson . The two balls are very different and our QB fumbled 3 times during the game and never did during the season.
So last year we knew that the playoff ball was going to be the GST, so that's that ball we used during the summer and all of the season.
Yeah it cost the program about twice as much money on balls, but we made the finals last year. Honestly us coaches hate the GST, it gets slick real fast, and is horrible with any bit of moisture on it. We liked the NIKE and Baden but our QBs preferred the NIKE.

No post season requirements here but I know we would not be happy if it did happen. We use the Baeden and love it. Those GSTs get slick fast and cost an arm and a leg. The ST5 is a much better ball IMO. Those Baedens though...come out of the bag sticky and stay that way. They are also cheap.

This has been going on in our section of California since 2002. The first year everyone fought it and one team even painted balls to look like the one we had to use. Teams were punished for not using the ball and the ball got better and you don't hear much about it now. It is a money maker for the section that puts on the playoffs

In Louisiana, you can use your own balls until the State Championship Game. Where you have to use Baden. They were horrible balls. Didn't affect us though, our QB's just didn't like them.
