I actually think an early signing period would be bad for the kids, though. There would be a lot of cases where a kid would sign with a school only to then have his coach fired a few months later. I know, I know: kids should pick a school regardless of coach, but we all know that HC is a big reason why kids pick certain schools and programs. the player would the be released from his commitment.

I had two sign.. We did a signing ceremony/photos... Will put this on our web page..
We have 3 that are still deciding (NAIA, D-II and D-III). No official offers but the NAIA could... Other two are doing their visits over the next couple of weeks.
I contacted the parents and we will do a photo shoot in March/April some time. Do a photo shoot, they can where their schools colors, t-shirts, sweats, hats... Parents. We will put that on our web site too.

now I do agree that they shouldn't be signing something We both agree on that. No fake signing for the DIII prospect. Pictures, special day, and so on...fine. Letter of intent...nah.

So, what, are some schools having kids "sign" totally ficitious letters of intent? Is it a blank piece of paper or do they write imaginary words on it?
When some of my teammates decided where to go, they applied like any normal student, found out if they were accepted, then decided where they wanted to go to school. "Recruiting" was negligiblel maybe for a particularly good player, or the local school would try to build a presence. Some schools would just try to build a brand by being in different places, but there was none of this. I'm still trying to grasp the breadth of all this.

I actually don't even think that having a ceremony on signing day is necessary for the DIII prospect. Have a day but it doesn't need to be associated with Signing Day. No reason to be...there's nothing to sign. Heck, a lot of kids are waiting on award letters from the college and financial aid packages to come in before they make their decision.

You know the other thing I was thinking about is, what about these "scholarship" kids in baseball. we have 2 DI baseball kids but they are only getting about 25% (tops)..what is difference between that and a kid with a real good academic and financial aid package...

Coach that has been my argument with the D-III, D-II and NAIA thing..
I lump them up in the same class... In all my years of coaching I have never had a kid get a FULL D-II or NAIA scholarship. ALl of them had to take out loans (Stafford) or supplement in some way. Again most D-II institutions do not get the full alotment and most break them up (Add in tuition waivers..).
For me if a kid goes I-AA / IA that is a WHOLE different world than D-II, III and NAIA. That is why I wait until later in the spring to recognize the small school guys too.

So you don't even try to associate the DII, DIII, and NAIA kids with signing day at all. I think this is a very wise choice. Scholarships can only be broken down so much before you really start to question what it REALLY is

When people complain about college sports they talk about high end D.1 schools and I think they're missing the boat. In my experience, there's more lying, cheating, and stealing at D.2 then D.1 ever dreamed of. Maybe that's why some guys are at D.1's and some stay at D.2's. The D.1's cheat better.
