Coaches, We coach in the inner city of Philadelphia, and have not used a sled in the past 15 years. The reason for this, is we are afraid of the neighborhood folks dismantleing it and selling it for scrap. I know this sounds funny, but that is the harsh reality of coaching in the inner city. We have had some success the past two years(10-1,8-3), but I have noticed that our line does not seem to come off the ball as a unit. So on to my question. If you had to decide to buy only one sled, which sled would it be, and why? I would like to use the sled with more than just my O lineman. Due to cost restrictions I may be only able to go as far as a 2 man or 3 man sled. Any help would be appreciated.
As a side note to this post I would like to let everyone know that I built a DVD Duplicator this past summer, and I used it this past season. The kids seemed to enjoy the idea that they received a scout film to take home, along with a scouting report of the upcomng weeks opponent. I posted a question whether other coaches on this site thought that it would be worth doing, and I must say that I am glad that I did. Coach Geiser

For the money, I would say the Rogers Lev Sled (2 Man) is the best value. We use it almost daily for virtually every position. Good Luck

any sled is better than no sled
what ever your budget may or may not be..a two or three man sled can get the foundation started.
I personally like the 7-man sled and do a team sled period with the younger guys. IT is a great leg work out and good confidence builder for the non-lineman.

I use the sled to condition, other than that it leaves too much room for the formation of bad habits.
A two man, lev sled would be ideal, then the coach can coach the fundamentals.

We have a 5 man sled that I use to mostly emphasize pad level, wide base, and explosion as a group. I kind of wish I had a 6 man sled because of our heavy use of the Tight End. I like to get our 1st and 2nd units working together.

A Level 2 Mod Sled....I love it and the kids love using it. They have a payment plan, either 1, 2, or 3 years. So you can budget it in for this year, get the sled, and then pay if off. Because you are in the inner city of Philly, I would keep it chained to a post or something. I am in on the south side of Chicago, and as hard as it is to believe, sleds have gone missing from the parks. Thankfully, the high schools do not suffer from this problem...it seems it has just been the youth leagues or park leagues. So, we got the best lock and thickest chain we could find. Good Luck!
