1st off - JV is separated into a 'white' unit and a 'red' unit. with white being the scout offense and red being the scout defense. all JV players learn both offensive and defensive position.
we work our varsity & jv teams together - all coaches coach together as one staff.
monday - 25 periods. during individual/group white goes with offense / red goes with defense team periods - jv whites serve as scout offense for varsity. red serve as scout defense for varsity off.
tuesday - 25 periods. indy/group - jv red goes with offense/whites to defense. team - same as monday
wednesday - 21 periods. 1-6: varsity lifts, JV team defense (service themselves) [OC/DC with varsity, others with JV] 7:break / rotate 8-12: varsity team defense / jv team offense (both service themselves). def coaches with def (varsity) while off coaches with jv/offense 13: break / rotate 14-19: jv lifts / varsity team offense (service our self) [JV O & D playcallers with jv, others with varsity] 20: field goal 21: field goal block
thursday: (jv game day - no practice for them) rehash kicking game (most specialty done during athletic period - some during practice mon, tue, wed) team defense team offense. maybe outside an hour .

Coach Huey, How is your staff divided?

Coach Huey, How is your staff divided? we have an offensive staff. we have a defensive staff. we all coach all levels, 9-12 i.e. our OL coach is the OL coach for the freshmen team, the JV team, the varsity... etc. our program as a HC/AD in charge of the entire program. An OC in charge of the offense & offensive staff for entire program. A DC in charge of the defense & defensive staff for the entire program. we then assign someone from the offensive staff to call plays for the JV; someone to call plays for the freshmen. same on the defense.

I like your organizational ideas. As a follow up to my previous question...how many coaches and how many players in your program? I am trying to get a handle on the player/coach ratio in your indy groups, etc. i.e. how many OL coaches, etc.

I coach at a 1A school in MD with 750 students in the school and about 35 on varsity and maybe another 20-25 on JV. On varsity we 2 platoon. As the DC, I was giving the amount of periods and any period where Off and Def came together. Other than that, I organized it how I wanted to for me and my coaches. But this is generally what it looked like.
Pre-practice 1-3 Agilities Team Warm up 4 Indy 5-7 Small Group 8-10 water 11 Group vs Off (scout def) 12-14 7v7 vs Scout (offense) 15-17 water 18 Team Def (vs off as scout) 19-21 Team Off (serve as scout def) 22-24 Special teams 25-27

I am trying to get a handle on the player/coach ratio in your indy groups, etc. i.e. how many OL coaches, etc. school of about 500 kids avg 40-45 on varsity avg slightly less on jv (38-42) (fwiw - our freshmen team is usually 35-40, bringing our avg total program numbers to around 110-120) 4 coaches on offense 1 qb/rb 1 wr 2 ol 4 coaches on defense 1 inside lb 1 olb 1 secondary 1 dl we all coach freshmen in the morning - they do a half offense/half defense practice. after school we practice the varsity & jv together. any time we go "good on good" we send the jv off to other end of field or on the other field to also do some team. i.e. varsity Off team vs varsity def team doing a "3rd & long" session. jv playcallers for both o & d go with the jv & they do a team o vs team d session as well. other 6 coaches are with the varsity.

Sorry that is Mon-Wed, with the exception that Tuesday starts a little later b/c of film, during that time JV vs. Cteam scrimmage
Thursday depends a lot on the JV game schedule, but is roughly: Warm up 5 Perimeter 10 plays Scout perimeter 10 Scout Team 15 Special teams run through 30

Your freshman team practices everyday before school? If i'm reading that right, what time? start at 6:45 am. usually some form of conditioning/weights (still dark; dew on ground, etc.) 1st period of school day is freshmen athletics. 2nd period starts at 8:45 usually off the field by 8:20, 8:25 basically, get them an hour & half mon-wed. thursday they start at 7:15 - so friday, no before school - start when school starts.

Even though our Monday to Wednesday practices are VERY similar, we did something new this year and put all of our practice schedule on Google Docs Spreadsheets, which is 100% free.
I shared the spreadsheet with the entire coaching staff. It gives you the ability to change the "access" for each individual, so our OC and DC can go in and write in their scripts for each part of practice; and/or adjust practice as needed. Our other assistant coaches can print a copy if they want, and it gives them the ability to prepare for practice as soon as they get on the field. No more waiting for the head coach to bring out copies of the practice schedule. I even have incorporated a column next to the periods/time that scripts what our managers should be doing in each segment.
Our JV/Frosh Head Coach takes the spreadsheet and duplicates it, then does his own practice plan after we split up (our entire program is together for the first 30 minutes of practice before we split up).
We have a general rule that all practice plans need to be finaled by 1pm, to give all of the coaches an hour to print their own practice schedule. It worked really well this year for us, and I'm sure will only get better.

Coach Plaa, had a question on your google documents format Was wondering what you were using before? For example I use a simple word / spreadsheet type which works great but the "access" portion you mentioned intrigues me. I like the real time access the other coaches on staff can use, as to not have to wait around. Also, were there any negatives you found as to switching to this format, any potential trade-offs or was it all positive?

I was using a regular excel spreadsheet before. Then I would email it to the coaches. If I was lucky, it would be updated and sent back. This does allow real time edits as you said. The trade off last season was that google was still working out some bugs, specifically with merging cells and with printing. These were fairly minor, and honestly I don't see any weaknesses now. They allow cell merging and I can't remember having a print problem since August. I also started using it for staff development. I love going to clinics, but most of my staff cannot go. So I type in my clinic notes that are specific possible improvements to our program, and I "share" them with our staff. Also, we meet once a month in the off-season. I use a "shared" doc file to post agenda, notes, etc., for the coaches that want to know what we covered in case they have to miss.

However, there are usually are a large enough number that the school will provide a separate athletic period for freshmen.

Thanks coach This is an area where I am always looking for new ideas. My most frequenlty asked question towards others in all fields, including outside of teaching and football, is always about organizational structure and planning. I get overly frustrated with all the technology and outlets we have available how as a staff we can't efficiently comminucate prior to getting on the field, which then leads to watsed time on the field. Thanks, I am going to for sure look into this, can't get too much faster then real time.
