Coaches, We as a staff are contemplating using our 15 minutes that have been allocated to dynamic/static stretching and speed mechanic work before beginning practice to a more football specific time period. We have a pass pro progression that our OL coach would like to use during this period each day and our QB/WR coach would like to use some Air Raid drills but not with all the athletes. We would only use the athletes who are likely to throw/catch the ball and want to find an alternative for the other athletes. Does anyone have any ideas about what to do with them? These are kids who might start on the other side of the ball and will not see any offensive reps or may be quite unathletic and have not fit anywhere.

I am thinking you could focus on a defensive circuit focused on agility drills and takeaway drills at a gradually increased pace. Begin with some takeaway drills and progress to more physically demanding drills as the body begins to warm-up?

In my two years at my current school, we have never "warmed up" as a team. We go right into individual. Warm ups take place with that specific group and the warm ups are unique to that position group. I thought it was incredibly strange when I first got here. I worried that not doing team stretching was bad. What about injuries? I have seen no difference in my time here from other places. Half the kids don't stretch particularly well when you do team stretches. They're young and resilient and doing agilities with their position group probably benefit them more than stretching together as a team.

I think this is a good call on your part. Spending 15 minutes on a dynamic warm-up in a waste of good football practice time, in my opinion.
One thing we did was use this time for special teams fundamentals. QB's and OL, that are not involved in special teams (PAT/FG exlcuded) basically just got extra individual time.
Snappers snap, punters punt, kickers kick, return men field punts and kickoffs, punt team takes their vertical slides, upbacks to what they do, etc.

We do a 10 min warm up period in the groups.. Like you mentioned OL steps, pass grids etc. QB/WRs most of the time pair up and do a line drill or settle and noose. Sometimes QBs go with the RBs to mesh/zone read. RBs do different movement/agility drills or maybe jump cuts or reads.. Defense is the same. DL does get offs, LBs might pass drop, agility etc. DBs hip drills..
Basically no pad drills, that can be set up quite fast and gets a lot of reps.
After that tho we will do a 5 min dynamic stretch as a team, pad up and jump into special teams.

How many olinemen are on kickoff? And the Quarterback? Perhaps you could also use some of that time to focus on specific positions, like the Linemen. I just can't get past the liability issue with getting rid of warmups, then again maybe there isn't one.

Is there a liability issue? I have not heard of one.
If there is one, to cover yourself you could perform 3 dynamic stretches such as the inch worm, elbow to instep, and reverse lunge with a twist and call it a day after 3-5 minute warmup.

We warmup for about 1-2 minutes, and go right into practice. Zero problems for years doing this.
We get in 5 -9 lines (depending on how many we have that year). Each exercise is for 10 yards. A captain calls go for each row (5-10) depending on how many we have. Everybody gets in the same line everytime all year so we don't waste time getting in line or groups.
A walk - knees to the chest High Knees Butt kicks Lunges Caricoa - both ways.
Clap it up, break it down, quick announcements, start practice.

The only reason I do any warm-up at all is for attendance. I agree that it is a waste of football time. Slower drills specific to your position is plenty. The best way to get ready for any activity is to do that activity-a little slower at first. Kids who come off the bench in games never do much of a warmup other than running on to the field.

This year was the first time in my 8 years we did not do a 15 minute warm up too (use to do the 15 minute team warm up thing.. Blah..)
OL - RB did some warm up agility stuf... They got right into indy..
QB - WR did some light warm up agility stuff and went right into pat and go's.... From there right into indy work...
Worked great for us this year.. No difference in injuries / pulls... Will NEVER do TEAM STRETCH before practice again..
