Is anyone having a real trouble funding the re-certification or replacement of their helmets before next year? We are being told that every one of our helmets for next year has to be the "Concussion Helmet". I'm no expert on helmets (I'm not the head coach. I know how to fit em properly. That's it.) We have been told that we have to raise funds to buy 80-plus brand new helmets and essentially get rid of 80-plus "old" helmets that were good this past season. I feel lazy for not researching this before posting, so maybe I 'll get the old "Search Google" reply. Ha. Is anyone else really struggling to replace helmets? Are other schools in a similar situation? We've been told raise over 15,000 bucks to pay for em, because our boosters aren't going to.

we got a hammered a little bit, guess there is a rule that after 10 years helmet HAS TO GO
we have about 20 helmets that are older, we use them at the freshman level... still in good shape, would pass recertification, but i guess they were purchased 10 years ago so they are automatically no good

I think we have about 30 that need to be replaced because they are old. Otherwise the remaining helmets that need to be replaced (50) we are being told are not the "concussion helmet" that will supposedly be mandatory. I didn't know if anyone else is having that large a number to be replaced.

Check out USA Footballs website. They partner with Schutt to give $10,000 equipment grants to high school programs.

There is no such thing as a "concussion helmet".
All of the new helmets are supposedly "concussion specific" ones, but all our concussions were in Xeniths, and the most expensive Schutts and Riddells. I make sure I purchase at least the 4star rated helmets from the VaTech study on helmets to cover myself, but I have still seen an increase in concussions because EVERYTHING is now considered a concussion, so even though I have "better helmets" and "better equipment", and "better knowledge", we have more concussions. Before too long we will all be coaching 7on7 year-round and lineman competitions will just be what we do with the bigger kids.

I put "concussion helmet" in quotes because that was the phrase used to me by an administrator, and because I don't think any helmet can "prevent" concussions. AS cqmiller said, things are now being ddemed concussions that weren't labeled such a year ago.

Does anyone know how the new 10 year policy actually works? I know that companies will know longer re-certify after 10 years, but I was told my a rep this week that they could re-certify after the 9th year and then the helmets could be worn until year 12 when they would be up for re-certification again. This didn't sound right to me, but is this actually ok to do?

However, my Riddell rep told me anything 10 years old or older is done, period. No questions asked. Even if NOCSAE recertifies it at year 9 according to him at year 10 it's illegal. I would love to hear some more clarification. Right now I feel as if the various sales reps are trying to get me to stay with them by telling me stuff.

Our Shcutt guy told us if you have a helmet 9 years old just by a new and do not recertify because you will have to buy a new one next year.

10 yes has been the standard for about twenty guys. It's just that with all the awareness/lawsuits it's being enforced.

Are there certain types of helmets that are better than others, in some of you guys experience? Or are there certain types that are now being outlawed?

no ten years was for RIDDELL only helmets (7 junior high level), all the other manufacturors (sp) said as long as it passed it was good to go... the new rule is that no nocsae certified place will recertify a helmet over 10 years old , also it was only "recommended" that you recertified every 2 years, but of course your tit would be in a big time ringer if a kid got hurt in uncertified helmet, now as i understand it they will be required to be recertified Every 2 years. If you buy 5-7 helmets a year and a couple jh helmets you should always be ok.
with that said i without telling you the brand , we had a helmet crack , actually bust open rt begind the left side ear area on a kickoff, on film it looked like the kid was barely hit, helmet was 4 years old maybe 3 and had been recertified this past spring

The ten year rule applies to BOTH Schutt and Riddell. With the old methodology, I was told that after the 10th year of use that the helmet would automatically be failed in inspection due to age and use. Even if the shell sits on the shelf for 10 years, it will still fail recert.
As to the "concussion helmet" comment, there's nothing that's 100% concussion proof. The newest helmets from Schutt, Riddell, and Xenith signifiantly reduce the chance but not to the point of non-occurance. From my experience, the Schutt helmets are easier to maintain as they have less parts than the Riddells. Everyone is not going to fit into every helmet. Based on my past experience, the best thing to do is get a mixture of Riddells and Schutts. The Air XP from Schutt is cost effective as is the Revo Speed from Riddell. If you have any questions, PM me.
Hope that helps.
