We are looking for alternative ideas for the end of the season player awards. We have never been a fan of awarding MVP, etc. Seems to highlight individualism, when we premote team throughout the season. Just wondering if any of you have ideas for end of season awards that are not MVP, etc. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Here's what we do... We give a scout team player award..highest GPA award and a Leadership award. The leadership award reads: The Wolverine Award is selected by the coaching staff and goes to the player who best represents Woodgrove Football on and off of the playing field. This player shows pride and dedication to the program during the season and out of season. He displays the leadership and attitude that would best serve the team and the student body. Future Wolverines would do well to model this player’s desire and commitment for the teams’ success. This year’s Wolverine Award selected by the coaching staff goes to

Not really a team award. We used to give an award to the most improved player of the season. Even the worst player on the team could win it in theory, if he were the most improved. Most committed player is another option.

We give MVP, Most Improved, Most Spirited, Offensive POY, Defensive POY, Special Teams POY, Scout Teams POY. Captains also get plaques.
Kids vote on the awards at end of season. They have 30 votes - I have 31. Hardly ever have to use my "override" however.
Do it for no better reason than I always have. Don't think it diminishes our Team concept because frankly I don't believe they think about them until they vote and that's when we're done playing.

Love the idea of scout team MVP.
I quit giving Most Improved Award. Not saying this goes for every school or every player, but most kids don't want that award. It can embarass them. For some kids it says "I don't suck as bad as I used to, and now everybody knows it." Now if you give them the hardest worker award or coaches award or Wildcat award or something like that - it is cool.

We do the standard ones - Off/Def MVP, OL, but we also do the Black Lion from coach Hugh Wyatt's site (http://www.coachwyatt.com/blacklionhomepage.htm). Very special award as one of our coaches was in that unit a few years ago. It's a great way to highlight the behavior you want the players to learn.
This year some parent was hooked up with a sign-shop so they had 18" square, vinyl banners made up with the helmet and the players number and name for the seniors. They also did a image collage for each Sr. with images from Fr-Sr. year. But that's from the boosters, not the coaches/staff.
At the awards banquet they used images from the season printed out and stapled together to make a triangle. Then put some balloons or flowers or whatever inside each one. that was a real nice effect because each table was different. The images were related to the table - jv players and parents tables had jv images, varsity players and parents tables had varsity images, coaches tables had coaches images. Actually a very nice touch.
Check out the Black Lion, it's not for everyone but it can be done well.

Here are our awards in what we consider their ranking. The rankings are important because on the night of the banquet, we give them out in this order so the ones that are what we consider "better" are at the end. We always start off with Academics first which is the announcement of our team GPA followed by each grades Academic Award Winner:
Team GPA Announcement Senior Academic Award Junior Academic Award Sophomore Academic Award Freshman Academic Award
Offensive POY Defensive POY Special Teams POY Player of the Year Toughness Award Practice POY Leadership Award Coaches Award Most Improved Player Heart Award
The POY awards go first followed by what are by far more team-oriented awards such as leadership and coaches awards.

I am confused by this thread. You don't want to highlight individuality, so you are looking for alternative individual awards?

... Seems to highlight individualism, when we premote team throughout the season. ... Not trying to change directions, but this is why we went back to the MVP, Outstanding Lineman etc... We have highlighted/promoted "the team, the team, the team" throughout the offseason, preseason, and season...I felt they deserved some individual recognition this postseason, and the coaching staff agreed. We have been where you are right now- doing away with those awards to get rid of the "individual" achievements. I look back and can honestly say I wouldn't change it, but on the other hand I felt that it would be selfish on our part to take these things away from the kids now that they have responded to being a team. I was proud as a player to get them, and recieving those awards helped teach some humility and honor. I have nothing but good feelings about individual awards, so why keep my players from having those same feelings?

We gave out an award this year called the 'Granite Award'. It was for the athlete whose off season dedication to the strength and conditioning program was seen most positively in his play during the season.
As important as the S&C program is to our success, we felt like it was something worth recognizing.

We give out the normal POY awards.
We give out a most committed and most improved. But the one the players want to win is the "Rattle Rattle Award sponsored by Man Up" The rattle rattle is the man up pills shaking around the bottle. The players say this to one another when they take a knock.
It goes to the player who bitches the least and gets on with it. Or a guy who had a bad injury and bounced back. We had a guy dislocate and break his shoulder in the preseason. He went through rehab and come back for the end of the season and played great. I suppose it goes to the toughest guy. Its normally a player who has put his body on the line throughout the season and got on with things. Rather than subbing out every 3 plays because his arm hurts after a tackle only to go in a play later.

We stopped awarding MVP's and Scout Team players of the year about 8 years ago. We had a coach who was an intrigual part of the operations of our team, he did everything that no one wanted to do...paint the fields, get items for the concessions, equipment issues....everything
So we created the coaches award in his honor. The team votes for someone that exemplifies work ethic, leadership, and ultimately doing the right thing. The vote may be changed if the HC deems it so, but this hasnt happened so far.
As it turns out, the "MVP" isn't the automatic recipient. It was interesting seeing our D1 receiver fully expecting on receiving the award during the banquet, but instead it was awarded to our D2/D3 linebacker who truly did and said the right things through out his career.

We give out the Retired Jersey award where we retire the recipient's number for one year and hang the jersey in our team room. It represents the athlete who has made football his priority but has done so the "right" way.
Other than that and MVP, we've pretty much done away w/all other awards.
One thing we have done, though, is bring all the seniors up and say a few words about them and their contribution to the team. It's worked out well in that you can't really tell who are the starters and who are not. The kids and parents really seem to enjoy it.
