Hey Coaches. Wanted to get your advice on ways you go about helping your players get recruited. I used the Hudl recruiting service, but just wanted to know what others do just in case that doesn't work. Thanks in advanced for any advice.

Fill out each and every recruiting questionaire that you get from colleges. Be honest and realistic. If you think a kid is a good match for a school that you haven't heard from be proactive and call the school. Ask to talk to the coach who recruits your area.

I would definitely say to be honest about the kids' ability to play at what level. Just had a 1-AA school (FCS I think they call it now) visit this morning and when he came in the door he had an idea of what he was looking for. He flat out asked me "Can __________ play for us?"
Unfortunately, I had to tell him the truth because a couple of the kids he was asking about would be long-shot projects at best and I told him that if they are looking for a project, than maybe. He thanked me and said that too often coaches will try to sell a kid because he is a "good kid" or "coachable", but the kid just doesn't have the ability to play at that level. They don't want to waste their time, and you shouldn't waste yours either.
If you have a kid that can definitely play at the 1AA level, then put a highlight clip of him together and get it to all the 1AA schools you have info on (and that the kid would be willing to attend). I basically tell my kids that I will HELP them get recruited, but I'm not doing it all for them. I won't send films to anyone until a kids gives me his top 10 schools that they would DEFINITELY go to. No point wasting time of everyone on something that isn't going to happen.

Send out film to schools that might be a fit for some of your kids.
Have your kids fill out the questionnaire from schools they are interested in and/or might have a chance to play.

I hear about this kind of stuff and don't understand it at all. If he's really not doing anything to help the kids what does he say his rationale is?

He's had cancer for a couple years and although its under control now, he just shows up for the games and does most of the admin stuff. He never comes to practice and shows up on game nights and just starts screaming at everyone. The OC and myself (I'm the DC) pretty much run the program. It's great experience for me. Just feel bad for the players cause we have two players that can play at the next level and he won't do anything to help them out.

fantom...I bet it is more common than you think.
An example. We had a kid last year who had D1 potential. The coach decides to take the seniors out the last week of their senior season for eats, and he asked if any of them where interested in playing college ball! The last week of their senior year...and he hands the player I spoke of a stack of letters that the coach had since the beginning of the players JUNIOR! year asking him to attend camps and meet with coaches.

I know Hudl has sure helped. The recruiting package feature makes it very easy to send all info and film/highlights to anyone with an email address.
Someone will look at it.

it kills me when coaches dont do anything or provide info to their kids. Sending films is huge. You will also help your kids by building solid relationships with college coaches. Your word sounds better the more they know you. Gives you good starting ground with getting your kid in somewhere.
The biggest thing is the camps and combines. You gotta get kids to those. Let them know when it is. If you have kids like ours, you may need to drive them yourself (our HC woke up to pick a kid up at 330 to get him in San Jose by 7 for a camp). But give them the info for the camps and combines. Like the NFL, they need people with height, weight, speed, and a big frame to build on . Ive seen several great players that were the best around but they just didnt have the measurable.
But get them measured and get them exposure.

I have been sending out highlight links in an email for our kids who want/can play in college. I don't send every kids stuff to every school, just what level we think they can play at. I think it is also important to at least call and leave a msg with the coach you sent the stuff to just to let them know it's coming or has been sent. I know they get a ton of stuff and giving them a bit more of a heads up can only help.
If they like a player they will get back to you, if not oh well you tried. It also is nice to develop some kind of relationship with who is recruiting your area. We are lucky that our area produces some talent every year so colleges come around and there are a ton of places with in 2-3 hours for guys to play at all levels D-1 to D-3. So guys stop in or call every year. I figure if a guy form the Big Ten stops in I will send our kids stuff to them and they can figure out if he is good enough to play there.
Just send stuff and call. About all you can do. The colleges will take who they want. You have done your part if you get the stuff out.
