I'd expected the Ramblers to give the Blue Devils a good game this time even though we'd beaten them 18-6 on Oct. 22, but they didn't. Blue Devils FB Oscar Abreu broke thru for 2 long TDs, the 2nd after recovering a fumble in our backfield on 4th & 2, and we wound up beating them 18-2. The Ramblers offense was trying to be a little too sophisticated for their preparation, mixing wing T, wishbone, and balanced and unbalanced line single wing. Their simulated triple option (the dive not being read) this time went off without a hitch the times they called it, but mainly their offense was to get the ball to their FB running inside by whatever means while base blocking.
Our players seemed to need a little extra challenge, so at halftime they started their own drill that involved slinging a ball around and doing push-ups if they missed, or something like that. That's when they weren't discussing video games. After the game and pizza, some of them helped fill out the Steelers to form a team for a brief scrimmage in lieu of a game. The Ramblers have a make-up game Dec. 3 for their snowed-out one vs. the Redskins, and I suspect the Steelers will forfeit theirs vs. the Spartans, but that's all for the Blue Devils.
So 7-0-1 and a 2nd consecutive Pee Wee Div. championship for the Blue Devils. They haven't lost a game since I joined the team. Especially impressive this year is that 8 of our 17 players (18 if you count a no-show) had no previous tackle football experience. We didn't wallop the division the way we did in 2010, but with so many good athletes having graduated to the Juniors Div., this was not what many expected, even with several nail-biting wins and one tie.
