I like how they think they have it figured out.
At first, they were going to pitch it wide.
Then they were kicking it because the returner had already fumbled it and they were going to try to recover it.
Great stuff!!!

Hope this will help clarify what a free kick is.
Fed Rule 2-23-3
A free kick is any legal kick which puts the ball in play to start a free kick down. After the ready for play signal and before the kick, each player other than the kicker and holder for a place kick must be behind his free kick line. A free kick is used for a kickoff, for a kick following a safety, and is used if a free kick is chosen following a fair catch or awarded a fair catch.
Fed Rule 6-1-1
Art 1 ... For any free kick line, corresponding to a scrimmage line, is established for each team. These lines are always 10 yards apart. Unless moved by penalty, K's free kick line is: Its 40 yard line for a kickoff Its 20 yard line after a safety The yard line through the spot of the catch after a fair catch. The yard line through the spot of any awarded fair catch.
Art 2... A free kick shall be made from any point between the inbounds lines and K's free kick line. A punt may not be used for a free kick other than after a safety. Once designated, K must kick from the spot. When a punt is used following a safety, the ball must be kicked within one step behind K's free kick line.
Fed Rule 8-4-1
Art 1... A field goal is scored as follows:
The field goal attempt shall be a place kick or drop kick from scrimmage, or from the free kick following a fair catch, or an awarded fair catch.
