Just a little story I would like to share. Last week during practice, we had a wild pig run out on the field. I am talking a 350+ pot-bellied hog. Thankfully it had no tusks and didn't charge anyone.
Anyone ever a problem with wild animals running on the field?

Friend of mine in Alaska had to call practice due a brown bear roaming the outskirts of the field.

Never lost practice time to an animal...lost a scrimmage one time against an "inner city" school team. I knew it was a bad area from working there before, but I wanted to open the eyes of my kids (all city kids, but on the "nice" side of town) and get some good work in against a great team. So I set it up with their Head Coach to do a one for one scrimmage - I go to your place, you come to mine type of thing. We were prepared to start up when a car comes screeching up, three mopes jump out, and a gang shooting occurs on the street next to the field . Three on one, and the lone boy got lit up pretty good - six shots to the body and no chance to make it. So my two assistants (one a Chicago cop like me, and the other a Chicago fireman) and I all shouted out "On the fifty, helmets on, get in line". We were out of there in record time ;D. This is our traditional after a game saying...it was funny because we all said it at the same time. We never did get the work in that night but the other teams kids did come out to our place a few weeks later and we were able to have a SAFE, and good working scrimmage.

Never lost any football time, but when I first started coaching I had to also coach junior high boys basketball. Well are playing a team in a 7th grade game and both of us are undefeated, winner gets #1 seed in the district tourney. About half way thru the first quarter a squirrel jumps from the ceiling and lands by one of my kids and scares the crap out of him (gotta love city kids!). Anyway it would not have been that bad if it only happened once during the game, but no we had 3 landings occur during that game. Every single time my kids, parents, fans etc would scatter like it would kill them. Ended up losing the game in the last minute of the 4th. The kids really did get taken out of the game, early and often, I will never forget that!

A couple of years ago I was coaching in a small rural wisconsin community. An emu got loose from one of the farms in the area. Our kids watched as the police shot it on the street next to our field. We were kind of suprised they would do that right in the middle of town, but it was the cause of a number of jokes the next couple of years there. The kids even made a computer animation of it which was put into one of our highlight videos.

I was coaching in alaska last year when a dog got loose on the field. Our DE was deathly afraid of dogs so he went running like his butt was on fire and the dog chased. Good old time.

Not yet, but read in the paper that the neighborhood around our school is getting overrun by skunks. It is coming, I just hope it isn't me.

A few weeks ago someone came the night before one of our practices and let fireworks off and burnt a bunch of holes in our practice field and the next day we went out to start practice and we was all standing there and some guy shot a bottle rocket at us. It grazed our fullback/linebacker's head and almost hit me... I had to dive out of the way.
We didn't lose any practice time but it scared the hell out of me with a bottle rocker flying straight at me lol... They finally caught and arrested that guy that messed up our field and stuff.

and how does all this pertain to coaching?
coming from oregon it wasnt unusual to see wildlife on the practice fields, but it didnt deter us from practicing or even get in the way of our coaching. Now, if it was a rattle snake that might be different

Not realting to animals and losing training time but one of my fav stories anyway....
We were on the team bus to an away game, when one of the coaches lads (16yrs old) breaks the silence by saying....
"It's going to rain today"
We all look out the window, to see beautiful summer skys, not a cloud in the sky, about 26 degrees C, just a lovely day all round. So I pipe up.
"Curtis, what the hell are you talking about???"
"Coach, the cows are lying down which means they know it's going to rain" as he gestures out of the window at a passing field...
"Curtis you idiot.... they're SHEEP!"
The whole bus creased over with laughter at the poor lad, still makes me laugh to this day.

Herky, from what I see this year, he may stay in Kinneck for a while as well. It's so bad, that I'm leaving the state on the 20th so the 10,000 NDSU fans (1AA school) take over the dome and win, I don't want to be any where near the dome. In fact I will be in Ames for the cyclones - sooner game that day. Need to get a fix of some Big 12 football, I'm not too sure what they call the game they have been playing in the dome this year.

During the fall we have to chase elk off our field almost daily. Acouple of weeks ago we had to chase them off the field before the game. A small herd had congregated around the visitors sideline and the bull was not happy about all the attention. It can be scary when a 7 point bull elk decides he dose not want to run away from you. One of our coaches said all he could think about was if he could make it to the goalpost before the elk got him.

Field we (semi-pro) played on always had a bunch of geese. Our hated in-state rivals were coming to town, so I had some of our players who worked near the field, go down on their lunch break each day during the week and cover the visitor's sideline with feed. It was white on game day (with goose grumpies). But, oddly enough, it was our player who got crapped on during the game on the field during a time out. I about lost it and forgot the adjustments I had called the timeout for.
