it all depends...how legit are these baseball showcases? If there is a serious opportunity for him to get drafted in a higher position thats going to make him decide between coolege and pros then I think you have to let the kid go. If it is some fly by night deal (which it doesn't seem to be) than I would steer him away from it. All in all it seems as though the coach, player, and team seem to be on the same page and handling everything rather maturely. As long as everyone understands this is an extreme case then I think they are doing the right thing. Should there be other big time stars in other sports at this school I think the HC has set himself up great in attracting them to play football as well with the way he's treated this baseball player.

For most of us this is about "kids" I coach HS ball in Canada not Pro or College ball the kids we get are trying to find their path athletically. If a kid in the case above is a baseball player and a darn good one ie: has a shot at a schollarship and maybe even a pro career yet wants to play ball you have to make it work. We are always trying to make stuff like that work you need to. I am sure there are times when this kid has asked baseball to wait for football.
We have a hockey player right now who is boarder line "great" meaning he might get a look but the chances are slim. He is a heck of a player for us when he is there he could easily play University ball here he just needs to play more football and he knows that. He doesn't start for us he knows that and is OK with that because we are making it work and he misses days. He plays and when he is there full time he gets a start. The other kids know that if they show they play.
I like the idea of my football guys playing other sports to often we are asking kids to specialize way to early and not developing other qualities that they get from other sports.
Again if I was at a college it would be different. As kids get older they will specialize. Look at any of the Olympic models of athletics they all have LTAD's (long term athlete development models) which in most cases (excluding gymnastics) don't ask athletes to specialize till later in life as their age and level of competition ramps up so does the specialzation.
I agree with that model. There will always be the outlier ie: Dion Sanders who can do it all.
