I'm dealing with a few boosters who are killing me about when this thing should be. Every school I've ever been at has done before the last game, but apparently some people want it done during the game.

Last home game of the year, before the game, often has been the conference championship game. Never been a huge problem for us, but if a kid and his parents give you 4 years, I think you owe it to them.

while it can be a distraction, I think it is a great tradition builder

Its your program Miller! how would you be able to do halftime adjustments if its done at half? I know Pat... This place was almost as bad as GW when I got here. Taking a lot of work to try and get this thing moving the right direction. Week 10 on Wednesday night. Opportunity to get the 1st 4-win season since 2008 and we got our first league win since 2004 last Friday. Program has been so bad in the past that the final games of the season don't mean anything so they have developed this "homecoming, senior night, and senior gifts are more important than the games" attitude. We are getting it changed though. If you get accepted at the U you always got a spot here to coach. I need a couple more coaches who understand scheme. Got some good motivators, good teachers, but only 2 of us who know scheme. Gotta teach the coaches and the players. Hit me up and let me know how you do this week.

My advice would be to not over do it, in terms of the "do something special." Simple announcement of players and maybe provide a rose or flower for them to hand their Mom and get the "Ahhh...." from the crowd is more than enough!

Timely thread. Our boosters just asked if it was okay for our senior players to watch their mom's skits during halftime of Senior night. Yikes! Talk about distractions!

Umm, that would be a "Hell, no". Skits? Agreed! The moms of the seniors typically do a little dance and song. No idea where this tradition came from...

We were at another schools senior night a few years ago. I guess the kids filled out surveys because the announcer had all this trivia about them, like "favorite football memory" or thing they'll miss the most and whatnot. It was pretty darn good, and neat to hear how many of the kids mentioned the same stuff, as if they really had the time of their life playing there and were a tight knit group. If I was an alum or an eighth grader for them, I'd be pretty pumped up about the whole thing.

at this school it's "PARENTS NIGHT" - every kid has their picture taken with their parents before the game, and then seniors and their parents are introduced and walk down the track. at my other 2 schools it was just Senior Night, and there wasn't a studio there to take pictures. But they have always been before the game, the last home game, never at halftime. We had something similar at my previous school. All the players would stand on the field with their parents and the announcer would go one by one and read what the players had prepared. If this is something that is done all four years, I don't see how it becomes something special..

We do Senior lap the thursday night before the last game at the end of practice. I hate it.
After the seniors jog around the entire football field stopping to talk to each coach along the way, they get a final salute as they run through the rest of the team and head in to eat their last thursday night pregame meal.

We will be doing the little info sheet reading as well as presenting each senior with a signature ball with their parents there with them... its a distraction, but we are playing last year's state champs in our last game.. so maybe it will take their minds of of the butt whipping we have coming!!

A quick question to the old guys on here... When did this whole "senior night" thing start getting so out of control?
I remember that in my last home game, I got to run out the teepee (we were the Redskins). Thats it. No flower, no skit, no letter, no "special run", nothing. I was too focused on playoffs and winning the game to even give a {censored} about some special practice honoring me. I had a letterman's jacket loaded with patches to prove my worth to our school.
My last varsity game was in 1997, not too long ago, so I wonder when these changes started taking place...
