K, I see you are right around my age, so here's my take (I've been here a couple times).
Yea, it's hard to get respect as a "coach" at a young age. However, if they still respect you and do what you ask of them, you should be good. Lead them as a captain or role model rather than a coach. It's only for a short time. Nothing permanent.
I'd take the job solely because it's about the kids. As one co-coach told me. You are there for them. They are not there to help YOU win.
Also, if you spend a lot of your time just trying to get respect, it will never happen, and the season will only get more rough. Just go in and do what you can. Run the system the HC had installed. The kids know it.
I'd almost approach this like a band of lost kids in the wild. You are the alpha male I guess lol. You take charge. Take what you all have learned and push forward with it. Preach resilience, toughness, attitude. All that good stuff. With these attributes comes discipline.

- Be as seamless as possible, don't try to change a bunch of things. In fact just make it business as usual. If you act like it's no big deal, and this is just as normal as normal can be, the kids won't know any difference.
- Be yourself. I doubt anyone expects you to be version 2.0 of the old HC. You didn't mention the reason for the suspension, but that is might be mute. Just approach it like this: Here we are, and THIS is where we need to get to.
-Enjoy it. You'll probably learn 5 years worth that you would learn about coaching, if you were just the DC, in the couple of weeks that you will be interim HC.

I was thrust into a head coaching role at the last minute over 17 years ago. You have received some good advice already. As Coach Woodall suggests, you will learn an awful lot in a very short period of time! Coach CB also made a very true statement - it is middle school, not the NFL, so just run with it and give the kids your very best, knowing that they likely won't be debating your job security on, "Pardon The Interruption" this week.
People asked me how I knew what to do as a new head coach. It was pretty simple. Rule number one is be yourself. Rule number two is remember the things that your own head coaches did over the years that you liked, and try to do those things. Rule number three is to remember all the things your own head coaches did over the years that you didn't like, and try NOT to do those things. Do that, and you'll be off to a great start. Good luck!

DC, I alway find your posts to be outstanding but you have out done yourself with this one- I don't think I have ever seen any statement that contained so few words that said so much. I am stealing this!
