Hello all. I just wanted to get a really good thread going with everyone's thoughts on some important questions in coaching... If you can sum up your answer in one sentence, let's see what we can all come up with:
1. Why do you coach?

1. Why do you coach? To impact young men's lives in a positive way permanently2. What is your philosophy on leading / coaching? Accelerate learning/execution through a clear understanding of why...leadership is best done through serving, not being served3. What is your philosophy on living / life itself? Growing in my willingness to do what others are not, so that others get what they need with God's help4. What is the best piece of coaching advice you've ever heard? (If you could give just one piece of advice to every other coach out there, what would it be?) Don't take yourself too seriously, it's not about you and it never will be5. 1.I coach Life thru the mechanism of Football.
2.Love is more powerful than fear, so coach kids up and not down.
3.Today remember that God is in charge, not me. Repeat as needed.
4.Stop the other teams best 3 plays and let your kids play fast.
5.Time spent worrying is always wasted. Know what you can change and ignore the other stuff.

BTW - DCOHIO: That last piece of advice for life is great, and so true, especially in our profession. Tell your dad... it'll make his day!

I am too old to play and love the game.
2. What is your philosophy on leading / coaching?
Leading: Finding the positive challenges in adverse situations
Coaching: Teaching those how to find the positive challenges
3. What is your philosophy on living / life itself?
Get as much as I can, share as much as I can, learn as much as I can and teach as much as I can. No point keeping my experiences to myself.
4. What is the best piece of coaching advice you've ever heard?
(If you could give just one piece of advice to every other coach out there, what would it be?)
Shut your mouth,
Know your role,
Do your job.
I think the best I have ever given was talking about pursuit angles and Pythagoras Theroem. That day the Parents where bounding for joy that their sons coach wasnt interested in (just) beating up their kids but also that their sons where linking "useless academic" knowledge in their favourite past time. The players got the point but the open mouths took some closing.

"Well, you tried and didnt get it. Time to move on." That philosophy of giving up easily has motivated me to do exactly the opposite.

why do you coach?
love the strategy involved in the game. football is the game of chess on grass or fake grass.
what is your philosophy on leading/coach?
never ask anyone to do anything that you first are not willing to submit yourself to. i.e. if you demand your players be respectful and treat your opponets with respect you should treat the refs the same way. i have seen many of a coach berate a player for trash talking and then turn around and rip a ref a new one. walk the walk you talk.
on coaching: I am a teacher not a yeller.

I am an existentialist I believe you give your life meaning and it is up to you to make your life go. i do not believe there is a god or gods who make your life go. i bleive too many people look outside of themselves for answers when the answers are within us. the world is random and absurd so there is no meaning behind a particular event. crap happens and it is how you handle that is what life is about.
what is the best piece of life advice you have heard? tell your wife you love her before for someone else does. same for you kids.

This is the meaning of life. so make as many great experiences in life because it is experiences that we remember. |

1. Why do you coach? It is a chance to have an impact on a kids life while doing something I love doing, teaching the game of football. Some of my greatest influences were my coaches, I hope to have a similar impact. 2. What is your philosophy on leading / coaching? The idea of leadership is to build more leaders, not followers. 3. 1: I started coaching because I love the game so much, I now coach because I love seeing the young men develop into the best football players and the best people they can. In some ways I can get just as much of a kick out of writing a reference to help a player gain a job after he's graduated as I can watching the player score a TD or throw a perfect block. I especially like it when the kids who aren't beig enough, aren't strong enough and aren't fast enough get their chance on the field and are able to make a play.
2: For coaching it's simple "Know your limits" never be afraid to tell players that you don't know something. It's a great learning opportuinity for the players, get them to find out the answer. As said best by Aristotle "True knowledge lies in knowing you know nothing"
3: Much the same a above, find my limits, accept them then push them. Do this in all things. I don't want to be sitting somewhere when I'm old thinking "I wish I had". It's gotten me into trouble a few times and I've got my share of scars and a criminal record to show for my younger days but I've learned and I now work helping others not to make the same mistakes as me.
4: Said by my first HC when I got offered a HC position "Never be afriad to hire someone who knows more than you" also "People will always knock you, they will always pull you down and they will question every decision you make. It doesn't matter how the team is going people will always tell you that you're doing it wrong. Just do what is in the best intrest of the team at all times."
5: The ideal knight is strong, brave, truthfull tender, courtious and self controled. He never raises his hand against anyone weaker than himself, nor speaks ill of the absent, nor is unfaithful to a friend. Honor is his watchword and gentleness is ornament. He is fearless in danger, compasionate in triumph, forgiving when wronged and kind to all living things.

I'm going to try to answer these honestly and not like I am at a job interview.
1. Why do you coach?:
I love the game. I selfishly need to be around the game because I enjoy it. Also High School football was an important influence on my life and I want other kids to have the same experience.
2. What is your philosophy on leading / coaching?:
Football is supposed to be fun. If you don't coach like your having fun then the kids will miss the point. High energy, effort, and enthusiasm.
3. What is your philosophy on living / life itself?:
Live like its your last. Honestly I don't live very "strong". I think everyone's guilty of taking advantage of what you have. I could do a better job of appreciating the small things.
4. What is the best piece of coaching advice you've ever heard?
(If you could give just one piece of advice to every other coach out there, what would it be?):
"when rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it" lol jk
"greatness has to start somewhere"
5. What is the best piece of LIFE advice you've ever heard?

"YOU DESERVE NOTHING"--definitely applies to coaching/playing as well, but my grandpa told me this when I was about 10. most honest advise I've ever been given.
