I wasn't really sure what to expect - I knew we were facing a pretty good team, and I still don't think my team is really very good, so I wasn't very optimistic. However, the other team's #1 QB was out with an injury and there best player didn't show up (don't know why), and their next best player got pretty well beat up during the game and was limping noticeably throughout the second half. It was pretty close through halftime - we had a 13-6 lead at the break, but they scored right away in the 3rd qtr to pull within 13-12, but then we broke away from there and won pretty easily 34-12. I'm not sure we could have hung with them if they had been at full strength, but that's part of the game, and we had some guys out hurt, too, so I'll gladly take the win.
With that we finished the regular season 5-1 and are the 2nd seed for the playoffs. We'll play the last place team (it's an 8-team tournament, but we only have 7 teams in our age division) and then get a rematch with the team we beat 6-2 a few weeks back. If we get past them we'll get a rematch with the team that destroyed us 31-7 earlier in the season. It should be interesting.
At 6 games, this is the shortest regular season I've ever coached. It's weird to be starting the playoffs in early October.

Good luck Doug. We start our playoffs this week too.
We are #1 seed at 7-0 and play the #4: a very athletic, undisiplined team that held us to our season low scoring of 16 (season avg 38). They also scored on us, despite having negative total yards offense. Double reverse pass for 45 yard TD. lol.

Matt - they scored on a 45-yd play and still ended up with negative yards of total offense?? Wow, your defense must be totally dominating. What scheme are you running?

Finished the season last night with a win 30-12, final record of 7-3 we do not have playoffs. We outscored our opponents 212-90/
Our first 5 games we were 2-3 then won out winning five games in a row, we never turned the ball over in our last five games, but gave up 5 touchdowns off turnovers in four first five games.
We missed some key players in a few games due to illness, injury and detention.
This was a very blue collar team not much talent or speed but we had great hustle and desire.
We blocked and tackled well, I guess that's is what it's all about.
Good luck to everyone down the final stretch of your seasons.

Doug,
Love your honesty Congrats!
There used to be a guy on here EVERY WEEK he would go through a litany of injuries, bumps and bruises- every single kid. Kids out due to discipline-vacations etc etc on and on and on and on
The teams he was playing sometimes had lots more numbers- the previous season he had lots more numbers- he never mentioned that one
NEVER ONCE did he ever post that his opps may have had a single injury or a kid out. Injuries happen to everyone, sick kids happen to everyone, kids missing happens at one time to everyone.
This past weekend we won our game to claim a co-championship of the division. The other teams best player- the starting QB/LB/kicker- team leader is out. When you only have 21-22 kids on a team, that is big. We won 25-6, lot closer game or even loss if the kid plays. YES we benefited because a kid was out. I have 2 kids out with broken bones, but only 1 was a 2 way starter and he wasnt to our team what the QB was to theirs.

Its Joes 44 I thought that might be it. I think I'm going to try that out next year. What has been your experience with it? Most importantly, what are the pitfalls to look out for? BTW, if you haven't talked to Joe in a while, you should reach out to him - he's feeling a little down. The HS varsity team for which he is the OC (which he does in his spare time after he's through being the HC of the JH team for the same private school) lost last Friday to a powerhouse 34-29 in the final seconds. I think that is only the second time any team he's coached has lost in the past 5 or 6 years. For us mere mortals, losses are just part of the game, but Joe isn't used to losing ever, so I think he's taking it pretty hard. BTW, his star player is Ray Lewis's son (actually I think one son is the varsity tailback and two other sons are on the JH team).

Just a mid season loss? lol. I spoke with Joe last week. I guess there are 3 Lewis' coming up thru there. How bout building a program with the help of that family. I need to call him. This is our 2nd year using his 44. I had previously run a 44 G, so i really liked the multiple 44 as soon as we spoke. This evening I will post thought / pitfalls in the Defensive section. Mind you, we dont play world class competition. Just blue-collared heartland youth football. Id crap if we had to play some of the guys on this forum. Dont get me wrong, we'd play, id just have a small crap stain on my shorts. Matt
