Hello all,
I didn't look thru the other threads to see if this subject has already been posted since I am using my iPhone to post right now. I am a middle school football coach at a school where our field is used by two youth football teams each week for practice and games.
My question for the youth coaches or even other middle school coaches reading this is are you or do you charge youth league teams to use your field? We as a school are thinking about charging these teams and it would help with simple upkeep of the facilities Luke purchasing field paint, new pylons, grass seed in the offseason, etc.
Your thoughts?

Coach, We pay to use the facilities at the field. The school does not charge us for the field but to have access to the restrooms. The elementary schools are first come first serve The two middle schools are ours and we pay 500 per schools for the season. So from August 1 to Halloween we use the fields. After that we practice under the lights at our game field. I called a friend of mine that coach’s in another town in our Association, and he has to pay 30 per week. 16 weeks if he makes it to the super bowl 30X16 = 480 for just his team. 23 kids on his team, so about 21.00 for the season per kid, I guess it’s not that bad, but that is every team on the field. So I can see where they are making a little money. Hope this helps Give you two samples of what is being done

We play our games on the HS field, and we pay a small fee plus the janitors that by union contract have to be there.
We practice at a city owned park, not sure if we pay for that or not. I would say yes, but not 100% sure.

We used to pay the school $200 per year for using the high school field for games, mostly to cover the cost of lights since etc.
We made a deal instead we measure, mark, and paint the high school field in exchange of playing $200 the school is getting a good deal. Who knows what it would cost to pay one night janitor to measure mark and paint the field by himself

It varies a lot from program to program, city to city, school to school, and even year to year. Back when I was president of my old program (99-00), I think we paid around $2000 to the city for the entire season for practice fields and lights for 5 tackle teams 1 or 2 flag teams, and 6 or 7 cheer squads. We also paid a few hundred dollars ($500-$600 is my recollection) per home date to the high school for the field and lights. In other years, we were given all those facilities for free, but in some years the costs were higher - it kind of depended on who was in the positions at the city/schools making the decisions. As I recall, it costs (actual costs, not a price including any markup) about $40 per hour to run the field lights (it sounded high to me, but I checked with several sources at the time and they all confirmed it, so I think it's pretty accurate), so even at $2000 for the season, we weren't even paying for the actual cost to run the lights. Anyone who gets lights for less than that is probably getting a pretty good deal.

Thanks guys. This really does help out some. I havent asked any of the other coaches around in my area what they do, yet, and figured I'd ask on here first.
The situation here is we have 2 youth leagues using our field along with my football team, boys and girls soccer, and band. The field takes so much abuse. We have never asked for anything from them in the past and with the field taking a beating like that, I dont think it is right for them not to have to pay a small fee to use our facilities. They both use our restrooms, concessions (which my football team doesnt even use during our home games -- the band uses it), pylons, goal post covers, paint stripers...basically everything but our coaches and players.
I just feel like we should get something out of this besides a headache every week.
I'd like to hear more from others if you have opinions. Thanks again!

You get players that are interested in playing football instead of soccer or not doing anything at all. In this day and age of dwindling numbers, I would think that would be very important to you. Those coaches that embrace and support youth programs rather than viewing them as a nusance are the ones that win in the long run. Dont think of it like a governmental buerocrat/postal worker

$38,896.34 / 794 players ( 36 teams ) = $48.99 per player ( $1080.45 per team )
We rent from the P&R and the School District and know full well we are getting the shaft...we have no choice. We also have no control over any concessions, we provide our own field striping, chains, pylons and goal posts.
Add $1000 per night for three fields with lights. Needless to say we never play games at night but must use them for the playoff practice sessions after daylight savings hits. That bill is typically another $10,000.
So all they do is mow, empty trash cans, clean bathrooms and complain that they are going broke.
You are giving those youth teams a super deal.

Dont think of it like a governmental buerocrat/postal worker dave, I never once thought of the other teams that use the field as being nuisances to me or my team. The nuisance is the abuse the field takes and nothing being done about it. The nuisance is the board members of the youth leagues thinking that a school football field is actually their field. I love the fact that they use the field. It gives me a chance to see what is coming up in a few years. My complaint about it all is the abuse the field takes from so many teams (I am guilty of this, too, with my football team) and it is okay that this happens. I just figured by charging the youth leagues to use the field and the teams at our school kicking in a portion, too, we could do something about general upkeep of the field.

You said this: "I just feel like we should get something out of this besides a headache every week" That is what you said about the relationship prior to my first post. That infers "nusiance" to me. That statement says to me- you get nothing out of the situation but wear and tear on the field and dirty bathrooms- a nusiance.
We use the local HS field and their MS uses it as well The Varsity usually plays same weekends as us We leave the stadium, concession stand, restrooms and surrounding areas including under the grandstands in much better condition than we find them.
Talk to them Give them a written list of everything that needs to be done prior to and the end of each game It's about setting expectations and accountablility

Sorry for any miscommunication. I understand where youre coming from, dave.
Thanks for the tips, too. We definitely need to resolve something here before next season. If not, we will be playing on dirt the whole year.
I would still like to hear others take on this.
Thanks alot guys! You've been very helpful so far.
